Mission Performance Stage 1 vs 2 n63tu

Hey y'all I've been digging around trying to figure out what exactly MP Stage 2 is. I haven't been able to find much of anything, so any insight you can offer is much appreciated.

Clearly Stage 2 is a more aggressive tune than Stage 1, making more power for longer in the top end, but it's unclear how it gets there. Does it require additional mods? Is the MAP sensor upgrade required? 93 octane (or higher)?

I'm interested in a plug-and-play power boost for a daily driver 2015 650i with minimal-to-no mods, bolt-ons at most. I do get 93 octane year-round in SoFla, and no emissions testing so off-road only is no problem. Does it sound like Stage 2 is up my alley, or is it for more serious modding?

Also while we're at it, what's cold start delete all about?

TIA!

Generally, the main way stages get more power is via more boost. The more boost, the more power. Supporting mods vary heavily from tuner to tuner, as a stage 1 for tuner A might be stage 2 for tuner B. Would be better answered by Mission Performance. But, generally speaking, stage 1 requires minimal bolt ons, usually just an upgraded charge pipe.

If the tune doesn't say if it targets 91 or 93, run 93 to be safe. Again, ask the tuner.

Cold start delete is exactly what it sounds like. Disables cold starts. If your question is better stated as "what is a cold start", a cold start is when you start the car after everything has cooled (car is cold), so the car runs a little richer and keeps the idle RPM a little higher to warm up the catalytic converter faster. It's primarily used for emissions. People disable it if they go catless or don't want the really loud cold start due to noise concerns, as cold starts can be loud.

Stage 1 tunes do not require any modifications to cars, stage 2 require at least catless downpipes. T map upgrade is optional for more boost but i wouldn't go there on 93 octane. When i tune stage 2 cars i recommend to use Eldor coils and 1 step colder plugs gapped to 0.020 besides the catless downpipes. cold start is when you start you car and it revs up and is a lot louder, especially when you're catless

OK so pending confirmation from MP (waiting to hear back, emailed them), sounds like I belong in Stage 1 Land unless I get the mod bug really bad down the road...

I'm pretty happy with my Stage 1 tune. I should have done it a long time ago.

Doesn't need catless downpipes, hi flow downpipes will be fine as well.

I'm curious how it feels to you in the 5-7k range, compared to stock which can feel a little flat up there.

FYI here's the response I got from Mission, sounds like I'll go with Stage 1:

Hello Tom,

I would stick to stage 1 for that vehicle. All you need to do is change your plugs to NGK and gap them down to 0.020” ad you will have a very fun to drive car. Stage 2 does improve over all power but its a bit more stressful on the motor and need supporting mods. Thanks

Improvements are slight in that rpm range. Not much more can be done with stock turbo.

Hm, that does sound concerning, but could also be an isolated case. Plenty seem to do fine on BM3 stage 2 and ER high flow cats, so I'm not too worried myself.

How long does mission usually take to build your tune I ordered dec 10th and they built the trans part supposedly but they wanted me to wait until bmw finished oil consumption test before doing my tune so I waited and finally did read on tuesday. I emailed multiple times with no response so I called and they did answer but alex said wed or maybe Thursday so on Friday I called and said lmk cause I'm going away for weekend and want to take my 550 but If tune isnt ready I'll take my x5 or e92. He said may be late and that he takes work home with him but now its Saturday and still nothing. At this point I kinda want refund and just go bm3 cause in reality he should have done my tune in December and then if I needed another revision either charge me a little or for the price they charge it's not unheard of to do a follow up revision. Plus I wasnt upgrading anything their was possibly a need for valve stems which turned out I didnt get done anyway.

I actually was thinking of biting it and buying your tune now that xhp is out or just pairing your tune with missions trans tune for now then going xhp. I just have a e92 with custom turbos making 650 to 700 and I know how horrible shifts were even at 500hp without a trans tune and that was low miles excellent condition. I did propulsive dynamics clutches and full rebuilt on that car and people think my car is a dct it shifts so fast and hard. So with the fact I have brand new trans on my 550 I didnt want to tune it and not do trans and start micro slipping etc. I would love to get to 700hp on my tu tho I'm willing to do meth or upgrade turbos etc I just want a tuner i can grow with like I have with v8bait on my n54 and n55
