F10 Shudder/stutter Hesitating Feel but no power loss or codes
2016 535xi - loaded, no mods that are obvious.
39k, automatic, performance tires Once the engine warms up and under any load in any driving mode, there’s a hesitation. Under low throttle it feels like inconsistent road seams. Under full throttle it almost feels like a manual being shifted bad. Does not occur at gear shift, only under load. No error codes on dash or in reader. No rough idle or start. Happening for about 2 months and slowly getting worse. I use 93 octane. Car is new to me, 9 months old and put in 5k in miles. Again, only happens after engine warms up. Car does NOT lose power and engine pitch doesn’t change. Car shifts perfectly. I change the spark plugs and air filter. No help. Did not change coils bc everything looked healthy. I tried and Italian tune up, no help. I did the throttle body reset. No help. I driven in all modes and shifting configurations. No change. I’m am at a total loss. What are your advised next steps? |

Definitely sounds like a misfire, could be a coil but since there's no code yet, it's hard to determine which one could be giving you a misfire. Wait until it gives you a code, sounds identical to what I went through, eventually it gave me a code and swapping the spark plugs/coils solved the issue.

I'm in the same boat with my LCI 550i. Obvious misfire under load but no CEL and no codes. I will be doing spark plugs this weekend. If that doesn't solve it, coils are next. Sad thing is, car is under warranty, but with no code the dealer "can not replicate"

With the engine running, unplug the connector to the coil one at a time. If no change when it is unplugged, that coil is bad. If the engine shakes more, that is a good one. Similar can be done to diagnose injectors.

New plugs seemed to have solved the problem for me!

"Can not replicate" with no code is a BS excuse. I would make a fuss at that dealer. Do their mechanics not learn basic engine maintenance and they only can do what the computer tells them?

If you have mhd. You can see timing corrections per cylinder.
(More corrections or not will show no codes) But yea, the next steps are spark plugs then coils. If the coils are high mileage, might as well. |

I had exactly this same symptom pattern and it was coils. It will only trigger a CEL if you really push the power during the hesitation (and sometimes not even then until the issues worsens). A couple of new coils under CPO and all was smooth again.

Same problem on an F10 550. Replaced plugs first because coils seemed okay. Replaced coils next because the issue didn't go away and that got it 90 percent better. I noticed gas on the plug in cyl 8 so the injector in cyl 8 was the cause of it. You'd have to check all 3, start with the coils since you already replaced the plugs.

Aaaannnnddss it’s back!!! Sigh.
So I bought OEM ignition coils from FCP Euro and replaced them along with changing the oil and filter. I let it warm up, filled it with 93 octane gas, and the drove on back roads like I meant it and it ran beautifully. Slowly since then it came back. No better no worse. Persistent. Thoughts on what to do next? |

I also suggest changing spark plugs. Personally if I'm going to be changing coils or plugs, I end up changing both.

I would have recommended the fuel filter first.....the key to this is the "feels like a manual shifting" which is a "long" hesitation vs one felt by a bad coil.....
So if you haven't done the fuel filter yet, that would be my recommendation.... Cheers [Edit] - I've had this issue also when a ground strap for the coil harness was loose......worth checking. |
