Very strange 535i sound
Hi there I've got a 2012 535i and it makes this very strange "chirping" sort of noise when the car is under a little bit of load, when either accelerating, coasting with engine braking or just rolling. The sound goes away when more throttle is applied. The sound is also present when I turn the engine off while I'm rolling so confident it's not the engine. What could it be?? I've been trying to find an answer for ages this is my first time posting.

IMO - check the interior HVAC fan. Turn it on/off, manual speed up/down and explore whether the sound follows. Not sure how "off" everything was when you mentioned turning the engine off while rolling.

Thanks for your reply. Yep I did consider it might've been that but no that was off. It's speed sensitive too, sound is slower when I'm going slower. Can't seem to replicate it by spinning the wheels on a hoist

I agree my 2013 328i does the same. It took a while to nail it down but the sound you posted hit it on the head. Its your the interior HVAC fan. I am not going to mess with it until it get worse.

Hey I don't think it is that. As stated, it does it with the interior fan off. I can have the interior fan off with no noise, but the second I start even rolling (even before the speedo registers I'm even moving) I start to hear it very lightly. I think it's possibly driveshaft related

The guy I bought my '14 535i from said he had that sound at one point. His mechanic found it was an exhaust mount and replaced it about a month before he sold it to me. Seems like they might get a little loose after time and the pieces rub just right at certain "acoustics" generated by the car's vibration.
