Replacing Right Front Axle (528iX) What other parts are involved?
OK...I have a torn boot in the right front axle. I found a replacement axle online. My tie rod is frozen-do I have to disconnect it to replace the axle?
Also...how many hours of labor or price is involved? I received a quote of $1,400 from one garage? Thanks Tasmanian |

I replaced both front axle shafts myself a few weeks back because the right side CV boot ripped as well. Good rule here, replace both at the same time because the left side is likely gonna go soon as well. These have an avg. lifespan of 70K miles.
As for replacing them yourself, it's definitely doable if you self-rate yourself a capable home mechanic. You don't need to remove the tie rod. You would just need to unfasten the lower wishbone, remove lower strut bolt, and obviously the stabilizer bar link. You will have enough room then to deal with the axle shaft. As for removing the axle shaft itself from the diff, just follow this video. The shaft is relatively cake, but the seal is PITA. Quote:

Thanks for Some Great Advice on the axle!
You post was a huge help. Now I just have to find a garage in South Jersey that is willing to put aftermarket parts I supply.
I have been putting it off as I got a quote of $1,300 including parts. Thanks Tasmanian |
