Dealer Brake Pad Replacement Cost? Help

My 2015 535i is due to get the rear brake pads replaced. I just called Irvine BMW (So Cal) and they quoted me $555. I almost couldn't believe it. I asked out of curiosity how much the front pads were to replace as I believe these will be due soon as well and the guy quoted me $596. This sounds very very high to me. Also there was not much of a difference in cost from the front to the rears which was a red flag for me. Can anyone comment on what you have paid at the dealer?

I will for sure get a quote and go with an independent shop if this is an accurate cost. I was hoping to go with a dealer this time around as my car is just about to fall out of warranty and I wanted to see if the dealer caught anything that might need to be fixed.

Thank you ahead of time.

Do it yourself or go to an Indy shop.

if you are a handyman, yes, do it yourself. it’s a fairly easy DIY, and i just did my F10 rear brake pad and sensor replacement myself last weekend in approx. 2 hours. The parts cost approx. $90, and am glad that I save up possibily approx. $460 by not going to stealership.

that cost actually includes the rotors as that's a similar price quote I got from the dealer for my rears here in OH. Also I don't know of any dealer that will just swap out the pads without changing the rotors unless you do it yourself

There is a minimum rotor thickness stamped into the rotor, so unless they are under spec they do not NEED to be replaced. That being said however, if a noise is to develop and the rotors were not replaced, you would then be buying rotors and pads again because you can’t install new rotors with old pads. So it’s kinds of a double edge sword. Me personally I replace the rotors with the pads every time.

While I was under the BMW Maintenance program on all my brake services the rotors were always replaced. I went back to my service records and I was able to confirm this. Maybe I got lucky or maybe my dealer is the shits

I was told that by BMW service department they haven't replaced my rotors when they've replaced rear brake pads because there was no need for it. I think I should go back and ask for rear rotors to be replaced

It depends. Most likely they just resurfaced the rotors because they were still thick enough. I did that for my front rotors (replaced them at home). Its much cheaper to resurface then have to purchase new rotors.

Thanks for the input from everyone! The dealer price quoted did not include rotors. I ended up going with a really good indy shop I have taken my wife's old Merc to in the past. Much happier with the experience and price.
