535D 313hp more power needed, remapping, chip box, anyone done it in the UK?

Hi.

I have just got a 2012 535d m-sport (313hp) having come from a 335d e92 which was remapped to 367hp.

I'm loving the 5 in every way especially the 8 speed gearbox so much better than the old 6 speed. Although the car goes well for standard compared to my old remapped 3 series it's feels it's just lacking slightly in the power and torque department.

I have searched the web and forum for info on mapping the 5 but most seems to be in America.

Has anyone in the UK had there 535d 313hp remapped either by a plug in do it yourself box such as Racechip, DTUK, Chip express etc or a proper ecu remap.

I read now that some tuning companies are now at long last managing to remap (reflash) the ecu's but am unsure which avenue to persue.

What results have other achieved and by which tuning method??

Any info and personal experiences / recommendations welcomed.

Simon at emaps should now have the software, I spoke to him a couple of months ago and he had it on order. He remapped my E70 version of the twin turbo diesel and the thing was a beast! He is well know on BMW forums and is very knowledgeable.

Unfortunately he won't touch my 530d as it has a BMW performance ECU and he doesn't want to risk remapping it as he has never done one, gutted.

Now that my warranty has expired, I'm taking mine in to get remapped on Tuesday next week, courtesy of http://www.celtictuning.co.uk/

I'll let you know how it goes.

Tony at DMS Automotive tells me he can get a 520d to 250bhp undetectably, so I am guessing he can sort a 535d too...

Having done a bit more digging some tuners are now able to remap this car (emaps being one of them) but still not as straight forward as it used to be. Looks like the ecu has to be removed from the car and opened up to be wiped and reflashed, can't be done from the obd port, and when mapped if anyone plugs into the ecu it is flagged up immediately that the ecu has been modified.

So maybe a tuning box is the way to go, they seem to have developed a lot in the last few years and now control the boost as well as just the fuelling and are totally undetectable once removed.

Tdi tuning do as nice twin channel box which looks like it produces good results.

Any one have any experience of them or any tuning box or remap on their 535d?

Interesting, this wasn't explained to me when I enquired... Simon seemed to suggest it was via the obd

I have spoke with Simon and he confirmed that the ecu has to be removed from the car and reprogrammed on the bench. Cannot be done through obd and that dealer is made aware of the modification if they were to plug into the car.

Not sure I'd be comfortable with that... agree it's probably best to go for a tuning box. I did look into racechip a while back. Had some promising reviews on the main forum, I had also contacted them about suitability for my car and they said it would work with my performance ecu. Didn't go for it as I heard the remap was comin, might be time for me to revisit this option...

Yes I feel the same. I spoke to Eco tune also for more advise and they filled me in further saying they actually have to break the seals and open up ecu they do the programming and then reseal the ecu with genuine BMW sealant so not to draw attention to the fact the ecu has been tampered with but dealer will be able to detect the mods.

I phoned tdi tuning today and the guys really seemed to know there stuff and explained the dual channel box that controls the fuelling and boost and on max setting say it can produce 382hp and 731 nm of torque, they also do a try before you buy which is quite nice if your local.

So you going to have one? Can your gearbox and drive train take 731 nm of torque? I know my X5 could only take a max of 700 nm but that was the old 6 speed version not the 8 speed that we have in our F10's.

Keep us updated on what you decide to do, if I can get some time out of work I might consider driving down there and trying one out.

I'm seriously considering it yes.

I presume so as it's the superior 8 speed but now you have mentioned it I better try and find out before ordering.

Any ideas where I could find this out?

The M550d has 741NM or torque and think it has the same gearbox?

I actually rang them today and it appears that the box is compatible with my ecu

I asked one of their techs this question and he indicated that the box will not exceed maximum torque for engine/gearbox/drive train. However I was not wholly convinced by his reasoning that the ecu would prevent this happening. I'm not a mechanic so will do some more digging on this...

Cool, yes post your findings if you find anything. I shall also keep digging and if gearbox can take the torque then I think I'm gonna go for it

Would still be nice to hear from anybody who has one of these tuning boxes fitted to their F10!

I believe the 530/535D comes with the ZF8HP70 gearbox and this has a max torque limit of 700 Nm.

Just an update for anyone interested.

I bought the twin channel tuning box from tdi tuning. Delivery was excellent next day and after identifying the two sensors where the unit plugs into (fuel pressure and boost) takes 10 mins to fit.

First impressions are very impressive. What you really notice is the extra torque it rips your head off, pins you back in the seat and feels amazing!

Comes preset on mid setting 4 of 7 which is set up for best of both worlds, power and economy then you adjust it to your individual driving preference, I'm after performance and Have put mine upto setting 5 at the moment and am really pleased with the results not that it was a slouch to begin with. They quote upto 382hp and 730nm of torque on the 535d (313hp standard)

Also if you quote the code MCLUB1 when you purchase you get and extra 10% off

I have the latest DTUK twin channel box on my F10 535d 313ps. http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/..._f10-11-313-ps

It is supposed to increase it to 350 bhp & 740nm.
The boost sensor is abit fiddly however once you know its easy to fit and remove.
The gains in performance are good.

I have had it fitted for 4000 miles now and had no problems. I have ran the majority of different maps on the box and have found that map 3+1 is the best, I have been running map 3+2 for a week now and it is slightly better than 3+1. I have already tried map 3+3 and although it was good, i received a 'Drivetrain Malfuntion' message after a 2 weeks of running that map and it put the car into limp mode. It is not the end of the world if this happens, just simply take the map down abit by the touch of a button.

I found map 2 was abit aggressive and when accelerating at low speeds it felt to snatch which i was not comfortable with.

Something i would recommend when you fit the tuning box, try a gearbox reset at the same time. All you do is switch the ignition on and hold your foot down on the accelerator for about 30 seconds and start the engine and go try it out. You will notice a difference.

Overall, I am very happy with the tuning box and i would recommend it to others.

There is also a discount code ASN80
