An aerial view of the volcanos of the Cascade Mountains in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The Pacific Northwest is largely immune to the weather disasters of many other parts of the country, but we have two pending catastrophes, one of which is pictured here: A volcanic eruption. In particular an eruption of Mount Ranier would create havoc in the Seattle area.
The other (invisible) danger is earthquake and tsunami caused by the Cascadia subduction zone off the PNW coast. The last was in 1700 (reconstructed from records in Japan) and we are overdue for the next. Coastal communities are likely to be devastated by the tsunami; this will be a disaster of the first order. Fortunately (?) we are talking geologic time lines here -- disaster could strike tomorrow or in a hundred years.

To the far right is Mt Adams and the far left is Mt St Helen’s, which terrorized us 43 years ago when it blew 1400 feet off its top and covered a lot of the area in ash. |

There used to be a sanctioned run back in the day. We thought we were humping along pretty good on our loop. The winners would routinely go under 7 hours. Fastest known time was 6:24. There's also 10,000 feet of elevation gain. How I want that body back. |

Walked right up to the ranger station and pulled our camp permits 48 hours before the start without giving it a second thought. Today you have to reserve a year ahead! Have done the Loowit around Helens a few times but never got around to the Timberline Trail (hood) or the one around Adams that requires a Yakima nation permit and 10 miles of trail blazing. |
