All comes down to running costs. I just had a coworker trade in his 550i after getting hit with a $5k repair bill. I think you could get a whole new engine for an SRT Jeep for that price. I'm on my second Grand Cherokee now and haven't looked back. I was shocked what I got for the first one when I traded it in for the new. Held up really well!

Not sure if I'm happy with Fiat-Chrysler service overall. They're nice of course but they haven't been able to fix a single thing on my new Jeep Compass Limited. It's the same dealership as my BMW but a different service department and location. I've had my car in for over a week for simple program update and when it came back I still have the same issues. I got so sick of Jeep and traded it in for a new BMW which was just a few $$ more

My buddy has a 2016 SRT8 and would like to get into an X5M after a few years.

He's never owned a BMW but when I took him to the dealer recently it was no question for him. The build quality and luxury/tech of a BMW is on an entirely different level than a 9 year old Chrysler product.

Than any Chrysler product. Even same model years. You will notice an immediate difference in every aspect between a German luxury car and its Chrysler competitor.

We've owned over 10 Jeeps, most were grand cherokees, and every one had problems early on. Clunky, plastic, unrefined.

X5m is more comparable to the Jeep SRT imo! I've owned an SRT for short period and that's a beast too. Brand or not, the trackhawck is on a whole new level of suv.

I grew up near the Chrysler HQ and my family knew many of their employees, including those responsible for "quality" control.

Total joke of a company. I'll admit the newest Ram and Wrangler are impressive despite having poor marks in quality metrics (as usual for Chrysler).

I don't care if it had 1000hp and cost 20k, I would never own a FCA vehicle. Period, end of story, no exceptions.

2. built quality is much lower on trackhawk..
3. depreciation seems lower on trackhawk..
4. tuning is easier on trackhawk..
5. rarity is better on trackhawk..
6. servicing the car ll be much cheaper on trackhawk..
7. newer is better with trackhawk..

Yeah I'm not surprised. You could tell immediately once you use the features of a Chrysler vehicle (absolute garbage interface, almost as bad as Jaguar's) then use the features in a BMW. sad that even their six figure vehicles suffer from the same poor workmanship. My cousin was an exotics tech at a Bentley dealership that worked on all exotic brands they sold. 90% of their repairs (not maintenance) were on maseratis

Aside from fuel economy, I quite like my Jeep SRT. After 2.5 years and 50k kms ownership, I'd highly recommend the Jeep GC for an SUV. I honestly can't find anything that I can replace it with.

That's the MO of GM and FCA. They lure customers in with a bunch of bells and whistles with a price 5k lower than the competition. It's too tempting for the average consumer, who seems to give zero shits about anything else of substance (reliability, build quality, etc.)

This applies to Ford as well although they aren't as bad as the other two.

Most people basically don't know squat about cars, nor do they care. GM and Chrysler should not even be in business. They shafted the American consumer and taxpayer for decades (and continue to do so today) yet dummies still keep buying their Tahoes Escalades Jeeps etc. Smh...

Agreed about Ford - that's why I didn't include them. I put Ford ahead of the other 2, although they are cheaping out again too. Their mid-2000s cars were horrible, started to turn the corner around '10/'11, now they're trending in the wrong direction again.

I believe the numbers would confirm this, but in the wild no one knows or cares. Every.single.time someone notices my SRT they ask me if it's a trackhawk. IMO, the problem with the TH is that other than the engine, it's pretty much the same as the SRT. Brakes are a little bigger and I think there were tweaks to the suspension settings because the s/c is heavy, but otherwise, you're buying an SRT with a bunch if extra hp, nothing else.

Having owned my SRT for a few months now and driven many euro SUVs (X5s and Cayannes), I can see why someone would prefer the european SUVs. The SRT sounds way better than any of the current turbo charged competitors. And frankly, for the SRT in particular, there really aren't any competitors---a base X5 or Cayanne isn't a compelling option. But once you move up to >$90k for the TH version, you really have to be an acceleration junkie or only buy domestics to choose it over an X5M or Cayanne GTS. What I like about the euro models, particularly at this price range is the build quality and the chassis tuning. The GC, even in performance guise is really tippy around turns. If I can "make due" with 475 hp, I would be completely fine with the >500hp in the X5M. The interior of the GC is great up to about $50k, but you start to notice the "wart" in quality when you start comparing it increasingly more expensive options. When you get to SRT guise you ask yourself, would you prefer a much prettier interior or huge brute of a vehicle?

So I think in this situation, the OP made a fantastic choice.

Even if true, there simply isn't a BMW that can haul 7000 pounds or any serious weight for work for us common folk. I simply can't afford a M-B Unimog as everyday working vehicle.

Thanks.
I'm surprised this Thread was recently revived and still active.
It's getting close to a year now with my X5M and overall I'm pretty content with my current 2018 X5M & 2018 M3CS stable. However, the X5M is "technically" my wife's car, and she has yet to program and/or use her M1/M2 buttons!!
Of course I knew the X5M would be overkill for her, so may eventually be looking into an X5 M50i at some point.

You can certainly pick on FCA for build quality, but BMW and reliability are oil and water. My BMW had over a dozen trips to the dealer in 3 years (28k mi). I've driven Grand Cherokee Hemis since 2014 and only had routine services and one recall visit. I'll never forgive my BMW for its catastrophic HPFP failure on my birthday.

I understand but you're one guy with an unfortunate stroke of luck. BMW reliability ratings have been on the rise for a while.

The X5 is larger than the Jeep. I haven't driven the X3M but I would maybe compare those two.
