Coil overs vs. Springs

Good Day Folks,

I went to my local shop. Guy told me $700 min to install struts all around due to timing it takes to adjust. He also said that it might rub or make noise eventually at the top.

He also said I should just go with Springs as I am not racing / auto crossing etc.

I have Mono SS coil overs, the cheap ones from ebay, paid approx $700. What should I do? Install H&Rs and forget about future pains?

I will be sitting on 20'' rims and do not want large wheel gap. I was looking at H&R's they seem to provide a nice drop. I do not want to pay anywhere near $700 to install these.

H&R is approx 1.4

Shop around for install. Some people think the install takes longer than it will. If you remove the speaker grills, they can install the rear struts much faster, which is what I did. some shops can install it in 2-3 hours with that.

DIY! why buy springs if you already bought some coilovers?

Do it yourself it's not that hard it's a little time consuming but pretty straight forward just make sure to get an alignment done afterwards.

Don't you have to take the struts off anyways to install springs? If so, I'd imagine it's easier to swap strut/spring with coilovers. But what do I know.. I paid someone to install my coilovers.

Ive been calling performance shops all morning for a quote to install coils and every last one quoted me at 700 for install and 300 for alignment. One shop broke it down to me as 7 hours of work?! TF??? i figured and hour and a half a wheel AT MOST. but- i sleep well with quality assurance from a very good performance shop so ill have to just shell out the cash but damn man. what he's saying is the same here in DC area.

Id imagine to replace the spring would mean the removal of the strut to replace the spring which is essentially like installing a new coil package.

Might not be a popular opinion but our cars are such heavy whales I think putting harder springs or coils would make it crashy. What do people think.

Engineers take in a count of that and that's how they come up with the spring rates and what not. i'm on KW's and it rides pretty damn smooth for a car that sits pretty damn low!

agreed. my car is just about as low as yours and it rides smooth. Does not dive on bumps or going over speed bumps.

I just put coilovers on mine, by myself, in my garage watching a youtube how to video. No real special tools needed other than the H9 hex bit for the calipers. Did the whole thing in like 6 hours. The rear sucks a little bit because the top of the rear struts are under your rear speakers. But other than that, its pretty easy. Too bad your not closer, I would be willing to help ya out, and I work for beer!

I thought because it's a BMW it's going to be complicated but it was actually a lot easier than my other cars. I think the only tool I needed to get was the star key for the rear shocks
