M166 Cracked RIM Question!
Could someone please advise if a crack can be fixed or even recommended to be fixed? It's a hair line crack about 1" long at the edge of the RIM from the inside was discovered during installation, for all I know they could've cracked it while replacing the tire as I've never experienced any leaks prior to the install date!
Is it possible for cracking a wheel during installation? I really don't won't to spend the money on a new wheel now if I can repair it with no problems, especially since I know next summer I will be in an F10! Thanks |

I'm going tonight to a shop to get it checked, I'll take a picture then and post it but it's literally a hair line that is about 1.5" long from the edge of the RIM in!

Cracked wheels can be repaired depending on the area where the damage is located. A good shop will spot weld the damage, and resurface the entire wheel.

Pictures of the crack!
Here's three pictures to show the crack. The black stuff around the crack on the bottom of the RIM is some material that the tire shop used in the meantime for the pressure to hold in the tire.
As you can see the crack is pretty fine! Your inputs are greatly appreciated! Last edited by Moopai; 04-28-2014 at 06:38 PM.. |

I'm sure that it can be repaired. Whether it makes financial sense to do so is yet to be determined. I would talk to a couple of local wheel repair shops and see.

That can be repaired, however keep in mind that it will not be as structurally sound as a wheel that did not require any repairs. Over time, the crack will likely come back. Looks like that was caused by an impact from a pothole.
