Is this a good price for new front brakes from Independent Mechanic?
I know its easy to change your own brakes but I dont have the time or tools
Here is a quote from a recommended independent mechanic the quote are for front brakes and I asked for all OEM parts. Is this a good price or should I look around for a lower price? Quote i got from Indy dealer for my 2012 535i M sport It's shows that there are 2 brake options on your vehicle. We would need to see which one it is. Smaller brakes: If you only need pads and sensor it's around 323 plus tax If the rotors are below spec the total will be 857.50 plus tax (rotors, pads and sensor. If your car is the bigger brakes Pads and sensor : 377 plus tax If rotors are below spec: 941.00 plus tax (rotors, pads and sensor) Labor is all included in the cost |

I just finished doing all four of my brakes (pads and rotors.) I did the work myself and the parts for everything cost me just under $500. I believe the kit for the front ( Pads, Rotors, Wear sensor, bracket, and grease) was $270. That seems pretty expensive considering a shop should be able to do the front brakes in like an hour, maybe 2 tops.

For just the front brakes, that’s high. Btw you don’t need to have them buy BMW branded parts as they are just supplied by OE manufacturers and rebranded at a premium. Do yourself and by the parts yourself and just take it to a shop. Should take no more than an hour to replace rotors pads and sensor at any experienced shop.

That is a good price for all Genuine parts, that is assuming they are composite rotors with the aluminum bell.... Pilenga and Brembo are the OEM's that manufacture the composite rotors for F10 535/550i.
CPO1986 clearly went with the cheapest aftermarket stuff he could find with cast iron rotors (major downgrade from factory) and is not relevant if you are requesting original. |

First, can you recommend tools that will help me be able to do future DIY? Secondly the computer shows I soon need to replace the front and rear brakes? Do I need to replace the whole thing being the front disc brake, brake pad and sensor and just the rear pad and sensor? |

Since the labor from your Indy mechanic is a constant, what would the savings be if you used aftermarket parts? The two piece rotors (aluminum hat riveted to steel disk) are available from other suppliers through RockAuto. In my opinion, there is nothing magical about OE parts especially rotors. Basically, one is buying a machined chunk of cast iron. Provided it's true, it would be hard to tell the OE from an aftermarket. A pad boils down, to friction material bonded to a metal plate. Essentially there are two choices: ceramic that offer less initial bite, dust and rotor wear or metallic that provide the opposite. It you want to replace rotors with every brake change, then go with the latter. Ceramics are easier on one's rotors.

Who sa,id there from ebay? In fact the only warped rotor I've ever had in 50 years of driving was on my 2016 BMW X3, so will you are at it, tell me more about the advantages of OE suppliers.

It's hard to list the necessary brake tools exactly because minor production changes in fasteners occur during the production run of the F10. For example, I watched a few YouTube videos before replacing pads and rotors on my 2016 sedan (BTW a great place to see what tools are needed - with some videos even annotating socket sizes). However, tools needed for my car varied slightly. Specifically, the large bolts holding the forged carrier where the sliding front caliper attaches. In the video these were removed with an 18 mm socket, but on my car a 1/2" SAE socket fit these odd bolts the best. Another example was the slide bolts holding the front caliper. Generally, it's thought to be a 7 mm allen key, but mine need the next size larger (8 or 9 mm). To avoid unpleasant surprises (and there always seems to be one or two), it's best to have sets of sockets and allen keys, so one can complete the job without a trip to the hardware store.

Maintenance
Check FPCeuro dot com for BMW and OE manufacturer parts. Great site for maintenance manuals is https://www.newtis.info/. Part diagrams by Vin # check www.realoem dot com. With these three site you can do almost anything on your car. I have done powerstop performance brakes, oil filter housing gasket, tranny oil change, spark plugs, etc.

These prices seem very reasonable to me. For me, my problem is the nasty RUSTY calipers. I hate the look of them and am seeking to either paint them or replace them entirely. Painting is perhaps the best option but I don't have a damn clue what/how to do it so.. Anyway, best luck to you. I hope the purchase works out. Let us know after the install - please. |
