Question Advice on Extended Warranty

Hi,

I am in Vancouver, Canada.

I am purchasing a non-CPO 2016 535i xDrive from a bmw dealer. From the outside it is good condition, has done 59000 kms and has warranty till Dec 2019.

The dealer has done the routine 175 point check and put new tires and brakes.

Should I purchase the bmw comprehensive 2-year extended warranty? Will cost me about CAD $3500 + taxes.

Thanks.

I was looking at the Toco Mechanical Breakdown Insurance for my 2016 550i with 33k miles. It is an exclusionary policy (so everything is covered unless it is specifically called out as not covered (not covered = wear parts like brakes, battery, tires, shocks, filters, fluids, etc). You must keep up and document all maintenance. Add 5 years and 75k miles policy with $200 deductible to my current car for $80/mo x 36 mo = $2880 USD. Be aware if you MOD your car at all it will void the policy or give them reason to deny a claim (bigger wheels, bigger turbos, DP, exhaust, tune, etc). I upgraded my front brakes with BBK and added M5 sway bars and that is it.

I would first question why this car is not getting the CPO.

Yea I would first find a one that is CPO first, unless the price is that much higher? Also I don't know if they changed the pricing or what, but $3500 is insane for only a 2 year warranty. About 4 years ago we got the BMW 3 year warranty for ~$1500.

Before buying it, you would want to bring it to an independent mechanic to check for the overall condition and any hidden damage. Don't ever trust the dealers and their checks.

I am new in the BMW world. I purchased a 2014 535i pre owned not CPO due to the condition and maintenance record (40k miles).
While checking the maintenance record with the service department, I confirmed everything was okay with the last service being the replacement of the shift knob, $1900! It was functional, but some of the lights were not working according to the report.
Well, I decided to spend the $3800 since this car was not new. I lease my cars, but I could not justify the lease program for a new 5 series.
The warranty is from Porsche, not BMW.
My car is sittting at the stealer waiting on parts.
Over $3k of parts and labor. I love this thing, but without knowledge and proper tools, I would never have BMW without warranty. They will cover everything under the warranty. (Electrical issues) do your research and if you are like me, get a reliable warranty in the market. Mine is almost free now if you calculate I am driving a brand new x3 as a loaner and put almost 1k miles on that thing.

Inflated dealer prices for service including their propensity to replace with new parts instead of better diagnosis and repair should not be considered a good comparison to what a good private BMW mechanic can do.
