I was not able to get that to work with my iPhone 3GS. I had a text message sent to my phone and was not able to read it on the screen in the car. I wasn't able to find a way to do it anyway. Maybe it'll work with other phones, though.

I doubt it very much — unless and until the US cars get internet, I think we're not going to see SMS, e-mail or other distractions. I'm not bothered by this.

I double-checked. The place in the video that corresponds to messages on the U.S. display are the messages sent via BMW Assist. You can search for a location on Google Maps and then send the location to your car. That address will go through BMW Assist and get sent to your car to show up on that messages screen. I don't know if you can send other messages via BMW Assist offhand. Maybe. I've tested the Google maps "send to car" feature and it worked for me.
So I'd say those messages you are seeing in the video are not from his phone, but sent to the car directly. |

We may need more testing, if you go to http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...eck_intro.html select Germany, then 5 Series and 5GT (since it's F10 like) you can see which phones support transferring SMS to iDrive. Neither my iPhone nor Blackberry do, seems some Nokia's work.

You don't put in your VIN. When you activate BMW Assist (which comes with the car for 4 years automatically), you register an e-mail address. When you use the "Send to car" feature at Google, you fill in that address is for BMW NA and you give them the e-mail address associated with your BMW Assist account. Based on that, the message will get sent to your car. Google never sees your car's VIN.
