Hi guys, can anyone please help. I hear a click when I back up my car in the garage and turn the wheels to the left. If I try to replicate it, I will not hear it again. It only clicks once. It's a F10 535 is with about 52K miles.

Can you roughly isolate the location of the noise? If it sounds like it is coming from higher up, could be the strut mount bolts loosening which I have seen happen.

To remedy that, retorque the 3 bolts on the strut mount as well as the pinch bolt on the bottom of the strut.

It could also be a million other things but this is something that is relatively low effort. Scarier possibilities could include a bad rack or steering column maybe, if the sound is coming from roughly that region?

Thank you, I'm still under CPO warranty but not sure if whatever it is will be cover under it. I'm doing some service in the next month or so and will have my mechanic check the things you pointed out.

I appreciate your input and will keep this post updated once I have more news.

I am not familiar with this specific service bulletin but I know F10s are fairly common for eating up wheel bearings and CV axles. I had a wheel bearing replaced and am due for an axle myself

The reason I think that it might not be related to this is because you mentioned you only hear the sound once. When I had issues with my wheel bearing, it was a consistent grinding and while I am currently having issues with my CV axle, its a consistent "tick tick tick .... " sound when I am turning.

That being said, its something I'd still say to have them take a look at because worst case, they will inspect the CV axle boots (which are notorious for ripping) and catch any issues before a failure there.

Other than your anecdotal experience, any evidence? This is the 1st I've read of this and I have about 90K miles between our 2 F10's with no issues.

Any chance this happens when you hit the brakes, or only when turning? If it's when you first brake, any chance you changed pads recently? I know this is an issue with a lot of aftermarket brake pads when changing from forward to reverse and the opposite for the first time and applying the brakes. Figured I'd throw that out there.

The brakes were very recently changed but they should be OEM since the BMW dealership did them for me. And, I am on the brakes when I'm baking up in the garage. I will try to replicate the click without touching the brakes and see if I hear it. That's in an interesting scenario you mentioned.

A few guys reached out to me with similar issues and they are getting this looked at soon. I'm hoping to hear something back and will keep this post updated. Thank you for your input!

Finally got this issue fixed. Here is what the dealership did:

"clicking noise caused by vibrations between wheel bearing and swivel bearing.
Tech 1 880- Verified brake caliper concern, Unbolted right front caliper,
untwisted, rebolted caliper, torqued to spec. Verified clicking noise, per SF
AH referred to SIB34-05-15, Instaled shims between hub and brake rotor
and between brake rotor and wheel, on both sides. Found clicking noise
still present. TECH 1856 - VERIFIED CLICKING NOISE CONCERN.
FOUND SIB 31 01 12 RELATING TO CONCERN. FOLLOWED SIB AND
PERFORMED REPAIR. WHEEL BEARING WAS REMOVED AND
MATING SURFACES ON WHEEL BEARING AND SWIVEL BEARING
WAS CLEANED. APPLIED TWO COMPONENT GREASE ONTO
SURFACES. WHEEL BEARING WAS REINSTALLED AND HARDWARE
WAS REPLACED. HARDWARE TORQUED TO SPEC. SHIMS FROM
TECH 1880 WAS REINSTALLED BETWEEN HUB, ROTOR, AND WHEEL.
VERIFIED REPAIR WITH FOREMAN. CLICKING NOISE IS NOT
CURRENTLY PRESENT AT THIS TIME."

Also, what the heck is a swivel bearing? Is that some weird translation of ball joint from German to English?

EDIT: perhaps the swivel bearing is the outer CV joint on the axle?

I have no idea what a swivel bearing is but I'm sure someone in the forum does.

So one of the remedy to front axle clicking is procedure that involves BMW REPAIR SET MICRO/ part#83192298825 for bloody $73. This kit is 2 components grease and piece of sand paper. has anyone find substitute for two part grease from BMW? Thanks

It’s probably nothing special, just something to keep the surfaces from corroding, sticking together, then clicking when they move relative to each other. $75 is about what I’d expect BMW to charge for $3 worth of materials, lol.
