Ticking noise coming from front wheel area...
Good day folks. I noticed that my 535i made a revolving ticking noise that sounds as if it was coming from the front wheel area when the car was rolling at low speed, going straight, at normal driving engine temperature. The noise resembles that of a normal functioning catalytic converter: tick, tick, tick, and on, as the wheels are rolling. The next day, I took my car around the neighborhood to reproduce the noise, but it didn't come up, perhaps due to temperature difference at cooler engine temperature, which might've explained it was the catalytic converter. So instead, I parked the car with my engine running and turned the wheels left and right, and it produced a very similar sound in the video below. As you can see when the front wheels turn left and right, it makes that "tick" noise I appreciate any advise if anyone had experienced similar issue. Thanks in advance.

I just had a similar (but not identical) ticking noise coming from my front left wheel when I turned to the right while driving. It would also occasionally tick going straight forward. It turns out that my problem was something I did not even suspect: the wheel bolts needed re-torquing since this had not been done when I had the wheels put in a couple of months ago (going from winter to summer tires / wheels). After the re-torque, ticking went away!
It might be as simple as that - check the torque on your wheel bolts. Good luck!

I've recently noticed EXACTLY that same noise from the front of my car while backing out of the driveway. I assumed it was caused by the wheels rolling, but now I'm going to pay close attention to see if it's caused by turning the wheel.

I just had the same noise, it was a loose nut on the knuckle for the tie rod end. It was ever so slightly allowing that ball joint to move. You couldn't see it was loose, but upon torquing it down it was not within spec, problem solved.

Hello folks. I took some shots of the front end links that connect to my H&R sway bar. The front wheels are off the ground and I was wondering if there is any way to know if there is anything wrong with the end links or if they need to be replaced from the way they look. I feel like the body roll didn't improve as much as I expected with the upgraded sways (front & rear) but maybe that's just how it is.

I've never been able to tell a bad sway bar link by looking at it. Sometimes you can get a bad link to click by rocking the car side to side, but other than that I just undo them and check the joint for tightness. It's usually the end that connects to the sway bar that wears first since it's the one that turns most as the suspension moves.

If your end links are loose on top or bottom that can cause noise but it wouldn't be at the same point every time you turn the wheel.

Sort of related - I saw mixed reviews about whether torquing the sway bar end links should be when it is loaded (as in the wheels are on the ground) or unloaded (wheels lifted/off the ground). Anyone knows which way is correct?

It matters for rubber bushings since the center of the bushing is fixed and the outer part moves with the suspension, so they should be tightened with the suspension loaded as to avoid being permanently deflected. |
