Can these cars fall back to using FM traffic?

Yes, but in our 2012 it's spotty at best, or the refresh is so slow it's of no value. There is a section of a local freeway (the 78) that the FM traffic constantly shows heavy; even when there is no traffic.

It sounds like it's time for the Android Head unit upgrade. I use my connected drive regularly. Killing off 3g is really going to suck, so I'm looking for workarounds.

After calling BMW North America I was told that some models will be upgraded to the 4G compbox but they are still deciding which ones. They actually activated mine for now, for free. So I would recommend to call them and have them activate yours and maybe provide any other details they might have.

Just talked to customer service. The nice lady told me they were documenting the complaints about losing the CD services and implied that how BMW resolve the issue is dependent on the amount of complaints they receive. So....

CALL AND COMPLAIN IF WE WANT BMW TO FIX THIS GROSS INJUSTICE!

BMW Customer Relations told me to talk to the dealer to see if my car is eligible for the 4G TCU/Combox retrofit.

I took my car into the dealer today for some maintenance and also asked if it is possible to retrofit the 4G TCU/Combox to keep remote services. It is possible, but was given an outrageous price of $1175 to do this!

I was under the impression that BMW would be supporting a free or highly subsidized retrofit, but at that price, there are so many other things I'd rather do than to spend that much just to keep RTTI and some other remote services. I believe in the 2G -> 3G change a few years ago, owners were given a choice of the upgrade for free or a gift card. Doesn't seem like this is what they're going to do this time...

I'll update this post with a part number for the TCU if they can give me one. I believe it should be 84102447928 according to RealOEM but will confirm.

Interesting. The lady I talked to said BMW were "looking into their options" on how to proceed. The lady at BMW Assist was about as noncommittal as one could be, offering little hope of remedy!

On our 2012 I took the upgrade to 3g; and now that will be done.

:edit:
That p/n seems to be around ~$425...

I had 2G in my last BMW and was indeed offered a free upgrade to 3G or gift card.

~$400 while isn't free, still beats the alternative $2000+ on the ID5/6 Upgrade.

So hypothetically speaking, you buy this and install it yourself. What else is needed to make it active and for ConnectedDrive subscriptions to become active again?

I wouldn't trust that p/n. Every site I check says it's not compatible with the 5-series.

I forgot to mention. BMW Assist hooked me up for free with CD & RTTI until 1/31. I noticed they didn't shut it off last month, so if you've lost the service I would call and ask why you're unable renew.

RealOEM does validate it's for the F10.

Touché

I wonder if the dealer's (inflated) price includes any necessary coding. Installation can't take but an hour.

I'm curious. Any way we can get a petition going with members signatures and submit that to BMW NA. For the upgrade? $425 for the box and they cover the labor? A petition would be very wide reaching and can even span across other forums. Heck, even BMWCCA.

Those interested should also call BMW NA so their voice can be heard. From my conversation with them, they will be upgrading some models but do not know which ones yet. Fingers crossed

Just called BMW NA customer relations.
While they did not provide any concrete answers today I was told to call back in about a month.
Supposedly, BMW is evaluating different ways to update to 4G and they will have more info in a month time.

That's what she told me. They were taking down information on the amount of calls they were getting. The bigger the hue & cry from owners the better the results. I HEAVILY emphasized how dependent I am on CD & RTTI. I told her I had no use for the concierge services, but the other two were critical.

That's good news! Seems the more people that call, the more BMW is interested in fixing this problem.

I just had a conversation with BMW as well, and their response has been very noncommittal.
Unless this leads to some kind of class action suit, I don't think they particularly care.
I've seen the same fro Audi few years back when they pulled some Google features (such as Street View) from their head units. The basic attitude is "So what? What are you going to do? Don't like it? Buy/lease a new car."

I'm trying alternatives for maps with traffic and don't like Waze or Google Maps as much as the original iDrive traffic. Daughter suggested Apple Maps for traffic and this goes with my calendar app where I keep addresses for destinations/appointments. So far so good. May get me to get the Apple Carplay upgrade especially since the absence of BMW traffic makes my HUD pretty useless anyway (would be better if Apple Carplay upgrade included HUD) and have been caught in heavy traffic three times already without traffic info.
