Steering Wheel Leather Wear

My steering wheel is the only part on the inside showing its age and it's not sitting well with me. The leather trim is showing exceed wear in some areas and it's just an eyesore, especially after it's been cleaned.

What are the best options here? New is out of the question because I'm not spending $1,400.

Look for Mewant wraps. They make one for the M sport wheel, and the M wheel, even though they're the same wheels dimension wise. Go for the M one, as it fits better from what I've heard

Leatherique has a steering wheel restoration kit. Stripper, dye, top coat. I'll dig around for a link and share if/when I find it.

EDIT: Here's a link -- http://www.leatherique.com/steering-wheels.html

Hey there! I actually found this pretty decent looking wrap for the wheel on www.eastdetailing.com

Pretty easy to navigate the website and all the M-Sport steering wheels from our era should be the same. If not they do have tons of options for different style wheels!

They're literally just reselling the mewant wraps. Might not be an actual resale, but it's definitely coming from the same OEM.

Went back and forth for weeks deciding between Colourlock and Mewant option and decided to go with the latter. Price was $69 vs $64 but seems like a complete risk with Colourlock considering how crappy the condition my steering wheel is in. I've used Colourlock in the past to repair leather seats and it worked like magic (I solely use their cleaner and brush on my nappa seats), but I'm not sure how much high-traffic pieces like a steering wheel would hold up.

Now I wait 4-6 weeks

Late update, but I got my Mewant wrap (full leather w/perforated sections) and it was a total disaster. The one they sent me was not a full closed circle like they have in the pictures or instructional videos. I took the steering wheel completely out of the car to work on it and literally spent 2 straight hours trying to make it align well and no dice. I basically needed 3 hands to tug from each end, hold, and then sew. The entire time I'm irritated to no end by the smell of cheap leather and got to a point where I just went mad, ripped it out and tore it apart $65 down the drain.

I just received my Colourlock repair kit, so I'll be trying that next. Videos make it look magical, but we'll see.

I see a lot of nicely refurbished or customized steering wheels online but none are heated. Does anyone know of any that retain heating and vibro features, or at least a place that you can send your wheel off to to have it professionally refurbished?

Using soft leather for the most used part of the car has got to be the dumbest thing BMW continues to do.

That sucks...you should ask for a refund though.

I got a quote form these guys last year: https://craftcustoms.com/photos-by-m...and-dash-trim/

I believe it was ~ $500-600 for a restoration of my steering wheel.

Will be curious to see how colourlock works for you. If you want to go beyond that, a leather specialist respray would be more even. They use a spray gun. Factory leather is usually just dyed anyway.

I used colourlock to fix my steering wheel. The finishing was completely off, just the fabric part of the leather remained in most contact areas. I applied 4/5 coats and I am amazed how clean it looks!! Not perfect in any way, but very close to. I highly recommend it

A vendor's name from the past the comes to mind is Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. You probably can google their name to get their website and contact info.

There's also a vendor in the Atlanta GA area that is in the back of my mind...but I'm not sure if they are still in business or not since it's been a while ago (probably close to a decade).

Both of these vendors had a choice of sending in your wheel to have it done...or using an exchange program...where you sent them your wheel and they would send you a wheel that was optioned the same.

EDIT: it just came to me...the 2nd vendor is Colby Wheel...so try www.colbywheel.com for contact info. If you prefer leather vs alcantera...you'll probably need to call and speak with them to request all leather or leather w/perforated sections instead of alcantera for any F series BMW.

FYI...either of these two vendors will cost significantly more than the Mewant steering wheel wrap.

The non-full circle ones are for the M wheels, not sure why they designed them differently given the wheels are the same dimensions, but I actually prefer the non-full circle ones. I had a full circle one and the bottom part was just so ugly, reminded me of a diaper lol. For the M ones, you really need to start at the 12 o'clock position and work your way down.

Mewant for me! It was a pain to wrap but the end result was worth it.
