370x24? The European 550i rear upgrade is 345x24, so what car are you looking at that has 370mm rotors that fit an F10?

Pics of your new setup would be great. I'm not familiar with an AP racing caliper that fits the F10, so I'd be interested in getting actual AP part numbers you used for this.

Regarding your question about using your F01 brakes, just so I'm getting this straight, are you asking if you can install front calipers/rotors from an F01 to the rear of your F10?!

Alpina B6 from 2016 onwards (600hp) have 370x24 rear rotors. However, its interesting to note that the caliper itself is probably the same as the regular 550i (same as M5) but its the carrier that,s different. Since even the pads share the same part number

I'd been looking into the 370/24 upgrade on the rear of my F25 X3, but bought parts for a 550ix 345/24 rear upgrade for it. That 370/24 rotor is most commonly found on the larger displacement F01 7 series cars, but was fitted to the F07 5 series GT, too. It would be very nice if just changing out the caliper carrier allows the 345 mm caliper to fit the 370 rotor.

It's either the caliper carrier, or the brake mount tabs on the hub carrier have more axial offset. That's unlikely though, since the OEM wants to change as few parts between trim levels on the same model. Caliper/rotor swaps are easy and cheap and they recoup the costs easily on sale. Not so much if there are snowflakes that take a different set of hub carriers.

You should grab some of those 370mm caliper carriers and find out.

The issue here is that the calipers for the F01 and F07 are the ones without the Electronic braking mechanism and are shaped quite differently for both the carrier AND the caliper. On Alpina B6 2016 onwards, the carrier looks similar to stock 5/6 series but the part number is different and its painted blue. Cost of each carrier from the online stores is upwards of $300.

This is really interesting, as I didn't appreciate the Alpinas got larger rear rotors. However, instead of adding even more rotating mass to my car, I'm going to stick with the X5M fronts and 550i rears for now . . . at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Well I also think that the Alpina B5 Edition 50 used the X5M front calipers and rotors. They look identical and the size of the rotors also matches so you def have the right setup in front. I'm really just intrigued though as to what caliper and carrier combo the B6 took as normally I would have thought Alpina didn't design their own brakes and used from existing options within the BMW lineup.

Wheel size over 374 rotors

Strange question, but does anyone know if an 18” wheel fits over the 374 rotor set up?

TIA

That is an excellent question and I know it has been asked before in this thread with no definitive answer. I looked up an EU spec 550i on realoem.com, but it lists a plethora of wheels and I'm certain not all of them were actually available on that spec car.

I then went to autotrader.co.uk and pulled up some 550i and 750i cars. Most had 19" or larger, but there was a 2011 750i with 18" wheels.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...cb223jz&page=1

I then pulled up a UK-spec 750i on realoem.com to see if it came with any other front rotor option other than the 374 x 36mm . . . it did not. Therefore, I would say that the larger rotor set up will work with 18" wheels on an F10.

For absolute clarity, I'm talking about the single piston caliper set up here, and NOT the X5M/X6M 4-piston caliper. I do not believe the X5M caliper will fit with anything smaller than 20" wheels.

18" OEM F10 wheels fit with 374mm EU spec 550i/550d front brakes.

I use 18" style 613 wheels as winter setup with 374 rotors.

Have a Zimmermann part number for the cross-drilled rotors in 374x36? Any idea on price? I can find the non-CD version for about $200 a set but can't seem to find the CD set in the states. Thanks

Thanks so much for that bit of homework. I’m actually hoping to get a good 4 or 6 pot caliper on the 374 disc and fit 18” wheels. Let’s see. I’ve had experience of many a Porsche race car with 380mm rotors and huge 6 pot Brembos running on 18”. The key is the wheels though. BBS race wheels are very thin and clear calipers well, other 18” wheels do not. Let’s see.......

Sorry for the delay. I'm not getting email notifications when someone replies, even though I've ticked that box! At any rate, here is the website in the UK where I found the CD Zimmerman rotors for the X5M brake conversion: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/zimmermann/9009315

It appears the Zimmerman p/n is 150.2947.52. Price is £178 each. I have no idea where you could source these in the US, but I can't imagine they'd sell them in the EU and not in the US.

On that website, you can also get CD Zimmerman rotors for the rear F10 345x24mm set up, but you cannot get CD front rotors for the front 374x36mm set up (only for the X5M set up).

Please check this page for Brakes and Rotor sizes for x5m that is a direct fit for F10.

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=34_0976

I highly doubt the x5m caliper will clear an 18" wheel. 395x36 rotors are pretty big and you can see they are barely clearing 20" Alpina wheels.

Good catch, as I definitely botched that reply to Fly335dGuy. I was thinking about the X5M rotors, but just realised he was asking about CD rotors for the smaller 374x36. The link to the Zimmerman rotors I used is for E70 X5M rotors. I have not found CD front rotors for the 374mm size.

Also, for further clarification, in my previous post to Porscha, I was not advocating that the X5M caliper would clear an 18" wheel. I was stating that the larger F10 caliper/rotor set up (single piston with 374x36 rotor) would clear an 18" wheel.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to find an outfit in New England that will take standard non cross-drilled Zimmermann rotors and make them cross-drilled/slotted.

Fly335dGuy, you just jogged my memory about a company I found in California that sells CD/slotted rotors for F10s: https://www.brakenetic.com/

Worth looking into. The duties and taxes that I'd have to pay to get them shipped to the UK are far more than what I can get the Zimmerman rotors for over here, so I passed.

Hello guys,

I had a question about brake upgrades on my 2012 528i xDrive. My car came stock with 17" rims and I have tiny brakes that really dont stop the car well enough. I hated my original wheels so I bought some 20's and I was looking to get bigger brakes. The problem I have is that I am using my oem wheels for the winter so I need brakes that will still fit inside the 17" rims during winter. I was looking to upgrade to either 535i brakes or 550i brakes depending on which of them will be able to fit within 17" wheels. I know that the rear brakes for the 535i and 528i are the same but the front rotors are about 18mm larger as far as I can remember. And I believe that the 550i rotors are about 12mm larger than the 535i. I believe the numbers for the front are 330mm(528i), 348mm(535i) and 360mm(550i). I also know that the rear brakes on a 550i are slightly larger than both 528i and 535i but I am not worried about those fitting as they are nowhere close to as big as the fronts. Please let me know if I am wrong about any of these numbers and if anyone can point me in the correct direction for a brake upgrade that would be great. Thank you!

You may want to check out my post/pics here regarding brakenetic(post #11). Horrible quality control!

Had this thread bookmarked for a while, shout out to everyone that's put in the work and research. Wouldn't have a clue otherwise.

Typically I made an error with this and mated 760i calipers with 550i discs, giving the attached result, with the caliper housing fouling the disc. Only by 1mm or so, I feel like the caliper could be easily spaced out but I'd rather not.

I was considering my options but can't exactly send the discs and pads back, and I've found 550i calipers which I've ordered, so the 760i ones are surplus to requirements. If anyone is interested in me donating them to their favourite charitable cause, send me a message.
