So kept smelling a toxic burning plastic smell and thought it was some of the brittle plastic clip holders that break last time I changed the vacuum pump seal, but lo and behold it was the turbo cooling lines on top!
Symptoms also include seeing some green crud around the fittings and obvious dripping. BMW Wants about 400$ for all the lines but it seems like the only parts that leak are between the rubber hose and the metal line. Can you say "new hose clamp" ?? So i did that but after a time leaks again. So it seems the hoses them self break down and you just need to change them. The whole job will cost you less than 20$. One of the pics below you will see how the hoses can really start to crack and break down. Need to get some lower profile screw type hose clamps for the "T" connection. Sorry the first pic is the completed job. I attached it wrong on my phone.

Did the same thing on three of the hose ends. It's a shame that these are failing so quickly, but the replacement/repair is pretty straightforward.
Thanks for posting.

Nice DIY.. i had the burning smell too. BMW of NWA couldn't reproduce the smell lol. Baron BMW in KC knew what it was in 15 seconds of popping off the engine cover.. in the parking lot.

Great Job Posting this!!!!
Stealer quoted me $400 for lines and $600 for labor.... I almost fell out of my desk at work!!! I am going to do this DIY job myself.... Stealer sure does take advantage of people, I been looking at different threads today.

Damn it I paid the dealer $480 to replace the oil and water lines to the turbos! They made it sound like you had to remove the engine to replace them. I could've easily replaced them myself, Lying D'bags. well it stopped the burning oil smell the car had, I've never let anyone work on my cars before

Having this issue now, about to do this same fix. Quick question whats the size of the rubber hosing? Inner and outer diameter? You think upgrading to silicone is a good idea because of the heat? THanks!

Leaking Turbo Coolant lines
Nice thread, check hose ID, I used 1/2 inch and they were big on the metal pipe side, will re-do using 3/8 and let everyone know.

Got a quote for a whopping $1800 to replace coolant lines and turbo coolant lines. The pipes are likely good, ill just redo the fasteners. I got a powertrain malfunction…took it in and was informed the fuel lines failed. They were replaced as part of the CCP last year so they're covered under bmw warranty but Im concerned theyl fail again...so I'd better get extended warranty. The cars only got 40k miles on it, these types of critical parts should not fail. Thanks for posting the DIY!

After a couple of days of smelling burnt coolant I decided to go exploring. I thought i may have spilled some on accident and it would burn off. I was wrong. After finding this thread I went exploring. and found this.
Has anyone ordered the OEM parts yet and did it that way? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_4190 If not i will be buying some hoses and do this myself too. |

I'm having a similar problem (see pictures). I'd like to DIY it. What clamps should I use, and what is the inner diameter of the hose for the two short sections that attach to the Tee connector?

Make sure to check the y hose connector in front of the driver side turbo. Mine basically disintegrated to dust. Pain to change out but doable.

Just an update for me at least. I ended up taking the beast to the dealership 3k later I think I am back to square one. I really love this car but repairs like this are going to kill me.. I do have a aftermarket warranty but guess what they don't cover hoses/pipes..
