Bmw f11 525d

Hello!

Does anyone have experience with the 525D 2016 year N47 engine?

I have heard that this engine is not very good, the mileage is currently at 160k km, is it time to replace the timing chain?

How do you know/test when the timing chain needs to be replaced?

Any other known issues, things to look out for?

My sister bought this car..

Valve cover can leak. On those last n47's timing chain isn't that bad. Mine is 2011 and had over 270tkm when I replaced timing chain. Vibration damper can go bad as in other diesels too.

The problem with the n47 is that 1 engine can go up to 300k km with original timing chain and have 0 problems, the other one might snap at 150k km.
I suggest you change the timing chain because on these engines you will not hear anything and it will snap. Will lead to catastrophic engine damage. Where I’m from we change the timing chains at 150k km, because you don’t usually know how it was maintained before.

In the bmw center they can test the timing chain but only the upper 1, which is not that relevant because the sprockets can be worn, chain guides and so on.
