MHD Tune vs. NJ Inspection

Dear folks,

I did a search "MHD Inspection" in this forum before starting this thread.

I have a 2011 535i 6-speed manual (4/11 build). Only other mod is M-performance exhaust.

I flashed MHD stage 1 OTS, with mild burbles and cold start delete in May 2018.

I reflashed in June to regain cold start (despite the noise it makes with my exhaust), as I found it easy to stall the manual transmission car on a cold start without the extra revs.

I don't drive very hard and I've generally been very happy. Normal and Sport mode still affect throttle as usual. The car feels faster with very smooth power delivery. I have commented here as much and given them props for what seems to be a quality tune. I never looked at logs, I never got a CEL.

Well today, my spouse failed NJ state inspection. So now I'm looking to see what I need to do. I have found info on the drive cycle. But before the drive cycle, I think I need to make choice in the MHD app:

1. Flash to Stage 0 (MHD remains installed, stock power)

2. Flash to stock (remove MHD)

I'm guessing 2. is safer to retest with but also requires more time with flashing and reflashing.

I have also pm'ed MHD so if they respond to me with a procedure, I will also make it post it here so folks can benefit.

I am stage 1 (91 octane) and haven't had any issues. But I haven't had mine inspected either. Does the inspection show which component failed the inspection?

Here it is. Are you running 91 because that's what's available or because of an abundance of caution or based on logs?

It turns out all of these emissions related readiness/incomplete parameter is on the MHD app as well, in the codes section. There are four or five very clear Incomplete's.

I've flashed to Stage 0/stock, without complete removal. I will attempt to drive the test cycle if/when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Any tune that turns off O2 sensors will auto fail OBD check in NJ inspection so make sure the O2 sensors are turned back on and follow BMW's drive cycle instruction to the tee.

I run 91 octane tune with 93 octane fuel in the fuel tank due to constant timing corrections. MHD, after looking at several of my logs recommended that I tune for 91 octane, and that's what I have run for the past 3-4 months. I still get corrections but not as bad as before.

This thread might relate to the new OEM/catted DP check box in the new MHD version - where I think MHD will leave those sensors on if you have an OEM/catted DP and perhaps avoid these headaches

MHD responded with exactly the same comment (as I have stock cats/DP). I'm not sure if that was available back when I flashed in May, but I will be sure to looking to check that box when I reflash.

Thanks everyone! Now wish me luck on the "drive cycle".

Good luck dude. That mhd option only came out I think a couple weeks ago so you didn't miss it back in May, should show up as long as you update the app

I would highly recommend getting an OBD reader that can give you emissions status so you will know when the required monitors are in ready state. I purchased one last year off Amazon for around $70 and it has helped a lot to pass emissions testing on multiple vehicles.

I highly recommend following this guide for doing the drivecycle it worked well for me.

Passed. I did the drive cycle at 230am last night, it was kinda fun in a Zen way.

EVAP never became ready, even after three bouts of idling. Perhaps, the tank starting out at 1/4 was not enough. The less official more paranoid versions say you need between 1/4 to 3/4's.

EGR reset only about 20 miles from home, going above and beyond the official to do. I decelerated (a second time) from about 50 only downshifting 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 (rev-matched) and hit the brakes only at about 3mph and that's either what EGR needed or it was happenstance.

Happy that NJ lets you pass with one Incomplete.

Interestingly, the stock car sounded different, idled a bit worse but did not feel appreciably slower than my "tune". I guess it's a mild one. Perhaps when I put it back on it'll be more noticeable. I was also driving beyond granny to achieve the cycle.
