Yes, well...
It's not height actually that cramps your style in a 3-series as much as girth. If you'd ease off on that biscuits and gravy and those fried-cheeseburgers-on-a-stick, you'd probably fit a 3 well.
Anyway, aside, this new 5 is looking pretty good. My fingers are crossed that they didn't overload it up with fun-sapping modernity. Last edited by Ron Scott; 02-14-2010 at 11:23 AM.. |

It's funny how some of you can't be critical of your own brand.
Dan Neil is a Pulitzer Prize winning automotive writer. He has opinions, but if you attack him because he says "motor" instead of engine, then you aren't much of a "motorhead" yourself. Most of us say "motor" as in n/a motor or FI motor. etc.. Your mother might say "engine." Also, and except for the 550i and M5, the 6IL motors will be a single turbo with twin scrolls, not twin-turbos (only the V8s will have those.) And Neil is correct about the chassis. People are starting to talk. BMW is focusing on softer ride dynamics. The complaint by regular folk has been that BMWs are too harsh as a mid-sized luxury sedan. Drivers may like a certain stiffness, but passengers don't like being tossed around. So, now we're going to get "exceptional comfort" (those are BMW's own words.) We'll be getting "Electronic Damper Control" and other softeners. Hopefully the M5 and the 550i with ZMP package will be more focused. But the 5er will not be what it used to be in terms of chassis dynamics. Ironically, Mercedes is going the other way, towards the "old" BMW dynamic. It's always a fine line between "comfort" and "handling" as both are somewhat subjective depending on the demographic. As MB and AMG are now doing, BMW and M Works will probably also do: make models with "comfort" in mind and also versions that are "sporty." |

I busted out laughing. The majority (70%+) of drivers want as soft a car they can afford instead of a stiff one. That's in the U.S. In Asia its probably more like 90% or higher. Also most people (in India at least) all hire drivers and do not drive themselves. Apparently driving is a chore? |

Also I was watching autocar and imotor 535i reviews on youtube. Both said that the car is less of a driver's car now and the electric steering elminated most of the road feel.
I don't know if there will be a fixed sport suspension, but the standard 5er looks like it will handle like a boat. To have some better handling you need to option it up with all the performance options. And then it still isn't as good a driver's sedan as the E60. And the styling is quite boring. The Jaguar XF has the best styling IMO. Either way my dad is interested in a 535 so I will definitely be paying more attention to new reviews. |
