I say bring it on. Too many of you guys care too much about badging and designation. Who cares as long as the cars perform and look great. |

This M550d is somehow paired with 550i in terms of performance, same for the 535d with 535i same on the new 525d with the new 528i....
I don t know how many of you understood this corespondence ![]() M5 is on a complete other level in terms of sporty driving, dynamics! ![]() For the european market these v8 petrol engines have a very low level of sales so BMW offered the wright alternative (M550d)! ![]() Everything is done by taking into account the prices for fuel, the cost of the final product and the benefits: it's clear that for the moment these diesel engine cars can t have a very good price in US so BMW will just waste money trying to adapt these cars for NA market! |

I personally love the idea of this car.
With all this volleyball-ruckus about the M'ness of the car, will this new line of models carry the WBAXXX or WBSXXX VIN numbering?

After reading this thread and doing some research I'm still confused. Besides the engine and the "M-tuned" suspension, are there any parts on this car that are different from my 550xi?

Of course there isn't a flat curve on a diesel. You finally get it.

On a serious note, don't worry about the high peak, as you mention it, there is a gearbox and a differential to take care of that. It's absolutely normal for a high performance engine. We're only talking about a "puny" 3 litre engine here. Yes it produces it's max torque @ 2k rpm, but it also has ~700nm @ 1750, and ~650nm @ 1500. You would love to drive that! I would!
p.s. If something, I'm surprised they managed to keep the max torque all the way to 3k rpm! |

This engine is a masterpiece for sure!
Paired with the sport auto 8 speed gearbox it's developed to give a smooth/ sporty drive with an incredible low fuel consumption ![]() |

So BMW still needs to come out with a diesel that corresponds to the M5. It will have four turbos, and it will be called: BMW M5 560d M-sport M Performance Edition ///M

M550d. 73 miles to the gallon?? Damn!
http://www.insideline.com/bmw/5-seri...rst-drive.html
Read the comments below. Someone mentioned that the car could go 73 mpg! Crazy! Crazy... If that's the case (73 MPG), WE REALLY NEED THE M550d here, considering gas is so expensive here. Is that correct though?? 73 mpg?? If you work it out, you get around 36 mpg. I don't know how the guy who commented on insideline got 73 mpg.
