Nah, not really - from IL's article:
"There's just not enough direct or progressive feeling in its electric steering system"
http://www.insideline.com/bmw/5-seri...rst-drive.html

"XBox steering" strikes again!

But I thought M550d xDrive had hydraulic steering, like all F10/F11 xDrive models???

Angry

I answer my own question...the M5 as well as M550d xDrive do NOT have electric steering, they have hydraulic. Edmund's (Inside line) don't know what they are talking about...

I think I will have to rephrase that comment, in every review I have read the M5:s steering has been praised...so I would say that Inside Line's opinion is bull...t

Amazing detail makes you appreciate the level of engineering involved. It also makes you wonder how on earth something that looks so delicate can last 200K+ miles...........

I agree completely, makes me look more to Porsche, which I don't want to do, but why am I looking at the 2014 M3 if the ///M brand will no longer be worth it's own name?

Interior and acceleration aren't the true marks of a real M car. The whole is more than the sum of it's parts - it has a soul.

I think these M-Performance cars are perfect for those who like the M styling but don't care about the full M experience. My only fear is that it will significantly reduce M sales as it appears to have done with Audi. I see a lot of S4 cars around and very few RS4.

I want that engine in a 3 series x-drive. Then I'd get some sort of tune

it's normal that you see more audi s4 than rs4....s4 cost less and it's not a true rs model

I read that audi is actually in the phase of testing on track their "S" model diesel, official info in the 2nd quarter 2012.So soon we will see audi's answer to bmw m550d

Speak for yourself. I am a US BMW customer and I absolutely want more diesels. My 335d has an unbeatable combination of fuel efficiency and performance, and it uses 6-8 year old technology. Just imagine the sort of performance AND efficiency these cutting edge diesels achieve. It's absolutely unparalleled, and it's a shame some clueless regulators are keeping them from US shores.

I couldn't agree more. Diesels have more power content than gasoline, how could you not want more diesel running BMW's?

Imagine driving a BMW with fuel consumption north of 30 MPG while still getting that great performance. I look forward to the day when I could go on a road trip and make pit stops to relieve myself, rather than constantly filling up.

But you are in the minority, to make money BMW is looking for markets in which there are significant number of people interested. I agree that there are definitely customers, and enthusiastic ones at that, but a mfg. cannot cater to that

Who has been making fun of these people? Not anyone knowledgeable BMW enthusiast I hope! Especially a 5-series lover!

Lest we not forget the E21 5 series---the M535i. BMW's first true sports-sedan. http://www.bimmer-mag.com/issues/96/...rder-crossings

A few years later, the E28 M535i was quite a beast too! Not to mention the E34 M540i! Of course it was not only the 5 series that got M badges at the front of the model designation. There were the M325i's and and e23 M745i.

///M means it was modified by the BMW M GmbH. It is not an ///M car which was designed by the division, only modified by them. These are M equipped cars, not M cars. In the past few years we have simply called this having the M-Tech (M-Technik) package where you get the ///M symbol in other places like the shifter, door sills, steering wheel, etc. But not on the trunk. Previously, the badge has been on the trunk too.

This is just going back to the roots. (and of course, smart marketing. people pay more for that tri-coloured badge on the trunk.)

I think the previous post was referring to these people...

Some things sound retarded on paper; sometimes the tree looks sick, when the forest is healthy. I think this is one of those times....

Originally, I heard about this M-Performance line and just couldn't wrap my head around it. Now I see it, now I get it. They are doing what I and many others have asked for: don't water down the ///M line just to make everyone happy. For the "torque whores", the "I need an everyday car with more power", the "damn my car eats gas" crowd, they have created the M-Performance line. Look at these cars, they are CLEARLY not ///Ms; if nothing else shows you that, just look at the torque / power curves. But they are BETTER and provide BETTER performance than many cars on the road, and certainly better than any normal "series" production BMW. They also provide the customer with some "individuality" and "specialness" many people crave and look for without forcing them to give up the perks of a series production BMW (reasonable pricing, fuel efficiency and EVERYDAY usability)---->yes I say reasonable pricing because the ///M5 sits 10% or more above this pricing. Many of us use our ///Ms as everyday cars, but that is because we compromise and are less demanding and lazy. For many, the concept of making an e9x ///M, an everyday car is UNIMAGINABLE. Others simply cannot afford an F10 or e9x ///M.

I am VERY saddened by the news the cars won't make it stateside. I think its ironic that the one market that may LOVE these cars the most can't have them because they simply don't have one thing the cars need to run properly: proper diesel. Would be nice if our politicians removed their heads from their asses and spent more time getting behind campaigns to make the public aware of the benefits of top tier, clean burning diesel engines and getting the oil companies to provide top tier diesel fuel amongst other "responsible" energy policies, but that is another rant for another forum

Kudos to BMW, they found a way to leverage the "///M Brand" without, I think, destroying the power of that Letter nor the pure ///M cars that are to come.

Cheers,
e46e92

These diesels make a lot of sense especially in SUVs. Why is the X5 M50d not coming to the US market again? Its made in SC for crying out loud, they don't even have to export it anywhere.
