2012 535i (N55) Engine Oil Change

PFA

Hi everyone,

What engine oil would your recommend for a 2012 535i with 53k miles? For the last oil change I used Castrol Edge Titanium 5W-40 (which at the time still had the BMW-LL04 approval). I've heard good things about Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 5W-30 / Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W-30 as well, so I'm debating between:
  • Castrol Edge 5W-30 M FST (BMW Longlife-04)
  • Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 5W-30 (BMW Longlife-04)
  • Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W-30 (BMW Longlife-01, BMW Longlife-01 FE, BMW Longlife-04)

Also, just had a quick look at the owner's manual and couldn't see BMW-LL04 listed anywhere:

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Whichever oil you decide to go with, try to get it from FCPEURO as they have an awesome lifetime warranty where you can send back the old oil for a refund.

I can't help on the oil decision as i'm using the OEM BMW oil since i'm not modified.

Got this from TIS about BMW-LL04 oil. Since your car is not a diesel and is not within any of those European region BMW-LL04 will not be listed in your owners manual.

"BMW Longlife-04 engine oils were developed to guarantee an optimum service life of the diesel particulate filters and petrol particulate filters.

BMW Longlife-04 engine oils are approved worldwide for all diesel engines with and without diesel particulate filter and petrol engines with petrol particulate filters. For petrol engines without petrol particulate filter, BMW Longlife-04 engine oils are only approved for the European region including Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein."

Here's a link about BMW-LL04 oil. Also if you scroll a little further down there is a list of "Named Approved Oil" by bmw.

Here's one for BMW-LL01 oil if you're interested.

Thanks. I'm in Europe (UK to be more specific), so the equivalent would be EuroCarPars/CarParts4Less

I forgot to mention that I'm in Europe, sorry. Btw, thanks for the links. I must've been looking at the US/North America version of the owner's manual.

Even outside of racing applications, that oil still carries Audi, Porsche and Mercedes certifications. Good enough for me, even if it did lose the BMW one.

Take a look at Renwable Lube Biosyn. I'm using Motul 5W40 and I quite like it. I'm also a fan of Redline, Shell/Pennzoil and AMSoil.

I use 5W40 in the winter, 5W50 in most operating conditions but will switch to 10W50 in very hot weather or hard driving/track use type enviroments.
