2013 528 Oil Leak Help
I have a 2013 528 with 55000 miles on it i haven't had any issues with it until yesterday while driving on a road i hit a decent sized pothole. Later that evening I was driving home and started to smell what smelled like something burning coming from the AC vents. When I parked my car I grabbed a flashlight and snapped some photos of what I saw. Car was last serviced 2,000 miles ago for a brake flush and no leaks or anything were found. I do plan on contacting a local indy shop tomorrow when they open since my local dealership (Checkered Flag BMW) doesn't have the best reviews. Just wondering what do you think it could be..maybe oil filter housing? Anyone know of any good shops in the Virginia Beach area?

yea i was thinking that also. i was just a bit worried because the amount of oil pooling and the burning smell wasnt sure if there was another leak i couldnt see maybe ill buy the parts from my local dealer and tackle it myself. from reading it seems like this is a pretty common problem

Looks to me like it is leaking right from the cap and not the housing. A few options for you:
1) Tighten the filter cap by turning it clockwise. I think 25Nm is the torque. It is printed on the cap. It may have not been fully tightened. Hopefully that is it and hitting the pot hole just flung some oil somewhere else. 2) The person who did the last oil change may have buggered up the cap gasket or not installed the new one correctly. Just turn the cap counter clockwise remove and inspect. Look for twists or a pinch in the large rubber gasket below the threads of the cap. 3) You need a new cap gasket. They are cheap and easy to install. They come with every new oil filter. Edit: Maybe the guy did a really messy oil change and all of that is residual. Hit the pothole, oil flung...is flung a word? Flinged... Also, the cap may have been overtightened and subsequently cracked. Again, remove and inspect. I think new OEM caps are like $40. Or get one from a junkyard for $5.

Check this first. Over my years I have learned to clean the dirty spot (take a before and after picture) and look again later. Most often it had just been dirt accumulation, or a sloppy mechanic

thanks for the info guys. car was smoking pretty bad this morning so ended up getting it looked at and looks like the turbo inlet line was leaking along with the oil filter housing gasket. i did try to tighten the oil filter cap but didnt think to remove and inspect the gasket.
