Do BMW dealerships have any problems with Route 66? I travel all over the country and want to make sure it's good. I would like one that is about as good as the original BMW warranty and the one BMW sells. The car is currently still under warranty. thx...

When I was researching warranties before I bought the Route 66 a year ago, I found plenty of folks posting that they got their Route 66 repairs done at BMW dealers. I haven't needed any service yet though.

Dealerships make a lot of their profit in the service department and in parts. They are not going to refuse non-BMW warranty business.

I had issues with a BMW dealer that wanted to charge more for the hourly labor and more hours for the repair than what Route 66 was paying. That was for replacing the valve cover gaskets and the alternator bracket seal in my previous 2010 550i. Route 66 was claiming their rates are based on Mitchell's manuals and the dealer was quoting what their BMW system was telling them. I ended up paying the difference (about $400) as I was fed up with all the hassle and I was pressed on time.

Is that the straight scoop? Do they prefer BMW warranties, though? I hear horror stories about local dealers, BMW and non-BMW alike. Seems they could care less if they fix anything. Sometimes they pretend they do and charge you anyway. This is the only place in the country I've seen this on such a scale. I guess there are so many people here they could care less.

I have relatives that work for the state consumer fraud division, forgot what it's called. You wouldn't believe the stuff these guys try to pull.

Would you recommend some other warranty?

My own self-warranty is the best - no profit in the sale - I'm at least $22K ahead (over 30 years of no aftermarket anything except for a camcorder which did break and pay off to warranty) of what would have been covered. I rarely have issues when buying a reliable product, so it really "pays" - sorry, couldn't help it...

For the price, it is the best you can get. I expect a certain level of hassle with Route 66 or any other aftermarket warranty for issues like labor charges, using alternative and less expensive parts, going to the dealer vs an indy, etc. The one issue that is a pet peeve of mine with Route 66 is their "oil seepage" coverage or lack thereof. If for example your valve covers leak, they will tell you it is a "normal oil seepage", even if they never saw the oil leak or know how bad it is. When they've declined the claim that the dealer submitted for the oil leaks, I called them to argue about it. Immediately the rep was trying to deny coverage by pointing to the oil seepage clause in their contract and trying to get me off the phone. But I din't give up and I was very persistent. Several phone calls and emails with pictures attached with proof showing that this is an oil leak and not an oil seepage, and they finally approved the repair (albeit for $400 less than what the dealer charged). However, it was worth the hassle as this was close to a $5K job that they paid for.

I've recently bought it again for my newly acquired 2013 535i (from penfed for $2995) knowing that I will most likely get my money's worth in repairs over the next 5 years. The 535i is a fine car but it will most likely need a water pump, HPFP, bushings, gaskets, etc. and although I have been a DIYer all my life, being a very busy 50+ year old and DIY for harder, time consuming jobs doesn't work for me anymore.

Service work, yes. If their warranty reimbursement is anything like Ford's (Lincoln) not so much. Back when I had my Lincoln LS I got "in" with the service and parts managers. The SM told me that Ford reimbursed only half of "book time" while paying customers paid full boat. I knew a tech that booked over 70 hours in a week. He could do multiple jobs simultaneously; like turn rotors while doing an oil change, stuff like that.

Wow, you expect to have more than 3 grand in covered repairs? Like you, I don't have time, or desire, for time consuming jobs anymore. I will do brakes and other short repairs if I feel like it.

I just wish we didn't have to hassle to get warranty repairs. Even new car warranty repairs are a pain. Half the time the mechanics in the dealer's shops don't seem to have a clue...

Repairs are expensive and yes, I think I will break even or get my money's worth.

If you sell the car before the warranty is up, then do you get a pro-ration back? I added a warranty to my R8 for 6 years. If I sell the car, I can apply to get a pro ration back for the un used portion.

I think I answered my own question

https://www.route66warranty.com/asp/faqs.asp

This states that the warranty is prorated for un used poration

Now my final question: can you add to a vehicle without an existing warranty?

Yes, all my vehicles I bought R66 for, did not have any warranty.

Good deal. So if you average it out: you're getting a warranty for around $40 per month. Yes, i know you do pay upfront then its up to you to get the unused portion back.

But for $40 a month I think its pretty cheap on a 50k mile BMW that could easily cost a few thousand per repair.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a credit union for southern California. Have tried multiple credit unions and they either said no to SoCal or want me to pull a loan against the car.
