I'm not confused. I read all your posts, and I get what you're saying about relative merits of each engine based on the buyer's priorities. I agree that for many buyers, the layout of the engine amounts to a line item on a spec sheet, and nothing more. I agree with much of what you said...

But you keep saying V4, V4, V4. It's driving everyone nuts, and now other people are picking up the incorrect term. You are making everyone around you dumber, just by being part of the conversation. Congrats.

We can't have a conversation about relative merit, because you can't use the correct terminology. How do you expect anyone to take what you're saying seriously?

Say it with me: I4.

Try it once more: I4.

It's not difficult. You already conceded the point. Just make the small modicum of effort required to use the correct terminology.
Wait did you say V4 ? Can we go over this again ?

Anal, aren't we ? Why don't you go over my posts again and check exactly how many times I "kept saying" V4 since I was corrected by that dude with selective reading problem.

COBodom: I bow to your superior intellect. I obviously have a selective reading problem and apologise to you and everyone else for misunderstanding everything you have ever said. I will learn from your well of knowledge and will continue to read your posts with the utmost respect and humility of my lack of understanding. Your knowledge on the subject of BMW and their engines are an example to all of us.

Who am I, a mere automotive engineer, to question you in your infinite wisdonm on these matters.

I will also in the future keep in mind that a cars performance is judged by NYC/NJ driving conditions and that this applies worldwide.

Your insightful posts have been a real eye opener to me, and I hope to many others as well.

Whatever floats your boat. You're having a dialog with yourself at this point.

That'd make it a monologue.

If you open the hood of your new 528i you will also see that it's not a V4 engine under there
I see, cool, learn something new everyday. I did not know that the 4 cylinder was also an inline engine.

I just upgraded from a 99 Accord with a 2.3L I4 VTEC engine (I googled/wiki'ed this). It is a huge upgrade for me lol.

Welcome to the forum, Swack. Sorry to mix you up in this, but you might be interested in knowing that the engine in your car is an inline 4, not a V4. I don't mean to give you a hard time, but it's an important distinction
Thanks man. Yea I just read a few articles on it. Did not know this before I bought the car. No regrets on the engine choice though. The only regret I have is not geting HUD..

The F10 5-series is a great car with all of the engines offered, even the "humble" 520D offered here in Europe.

Over here we also have the 520i as the base model with a 184HP version of the 528i engine, even though that model might lack some grunt, there have been positive reviews on it by journalists.

Haha, Wikipedia for great justice!

We went with the new turbo I4 in our X3. I agree, no regrets at all. We actually test drove the old non-turbo I6 powered X3 28i about a year before we bought our car. I can tell the difference in smoothness between the I4 and the old I6, but I'd trade it any day for the performance of the turbo I4 in the X3. The N20 (BMW's code for the turbo I4) is an incredible little engine.

I have a 328i at the moment and am contemplating between a 12 i6 or 13 i4 528i. I can honestly say the biggest disappointment i have with my 09 328i is the damn gm tranny! I'm just glad that's not an issue with the f10. You can't go wrong with either
