Hi Edgar,
I already answered your pm, but mine has right at 400hp, and I have been delighted with the manual transmission. No regrets at all. Bill

I do get both sides of the argument and understand talk about size and refinement of 5 series, and get why people argue that manual is simply not needed here. Better performance, gas mileage, smooth(er) gear changes and everything else said about fantastic, simply fantastic automatic transmission that’s in these cars. This is of those, "Beatles Vs. Rolling Stones", "Blondes Vs. Brunettes" , "records Vs. digital files"… etc… etc… there’s no right or wrong really, just personal preference. However, for those like me, who love driving manuals, no matter how good (and again, this is stunning good 8 speed AT) it’s just not quite as satisfying to drive as (also quite good) manual transmission. For me, this has nothing to do about 0-60 or gas mileage, it’s simply about personal preference, “driving involvement” and satisfaction I get out of it. Sad to see most manufacturers are taking this option away. I get we’re in minority (especially in N. America) and soon will have to move on, but for me, this is one of the reasons I’m not driving A6 today. |

Ginger vs. Mary Ann?
I'm dating myself with a Gilligan's Island reference I suspect. Couldn't agree with you more triple B.

Took my 11' 550i RWD out of hiding today as its not snowing for a few days. I've only owned the car about a year, and my now winter car (e46 99' 323i) which i've owned for 12 years with over 300K miles on it is a manual.
I really wanted my 550i to be a manual after driver the 3 for so long. Its not fast but its fun to drive. I thought I would miss the manual but that 8AT trani really helped me with the "Lazy" transition! I love it, and never thought I would say that. I have felt other auto trani's before, but this, is something else!. If I could still get my f10 in manual would I still take it? Probably yes, but am I missing it ? Nah! lol. My good friend has a Lexus ISF, 8 speed auto, and to me my Bimmer has a nicer almost manual shift to it when you put it in sport mode and give the throttle the correct touch. Some of my boys thought it was manual the first time they heard me pass. My 2 cents from someone who has driven manual trani's over 30 years. |

I'm actually in agreement with you on these. Never driven car with AT and said "wow, that is amazing, just amazing transmission" until I tried this one. Good to read you're happy, it gives those of us who are still stubbornly holding onto these some hope for the future. We might not have a choice but to move on. |

Nice photos. I like that combination. Couldn't be more different than my CBM and Oyster.
As the rest of you can see, the manual is not as attractively set up as the auto. More plastic and less wood I guess. The old cupholder issue is worse as well, though either is an enormous improvement over the E39. I actually had to buy an aftermarket for that vehicle to accomodate coffee on the way to the office. Is that an air freshener dangling off your steering wheel?

The 550xi is the 3rd car in my entire life with an auto. That's out of 13 cars. I also test drove a 550i with the manual as well. i loved the more engaging feel. But honestly, I will have to say the following:
1. I live in the city, it's not fun. 2. Manual + iDrive can mess you up sometimes 3. The F10 is quite heavy and the manual isn't as fun as it should 4. Slower in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile. 5. Worse gas mileage 6. Less gears than the auto There are some very good things about it that I love: 1. Best antitheft feature today 2. More engagement, more spin, more control 3. Blast to drive through the bends if you have the upgraded suspension |
