Service Counter not Counting

Since picking up my car, the service meter was reset. I have already driven 2000 miles on the car but it still shows next service date in 8000 miles or 2/2021. Same for the oil, brake pads, etc. Is there something that is supposed to be activated? I remember before the initial service the car showed it was pending oil change etc, so I know it used to work. what needs to be done to get this up and running again?

2000+8000 = 10000 miles, which is BMW's suggest oil change mileage interval. 2/2021 is a little under a year, so that's correct too. Nothing seems to be off, why do you think it's not working?

Next service shows the earliest service date for whatever item in CBS system. Brake pads tend to change quite frequently as it's dependent on how much you drive and how you drive, so it's more of a guesstimate than anything else.

I am pretty easy on the brakes. We drove Pike's Peak years ago (before they paved the whole thing). About 2/3 of the way down they do a brake temperature check as most people ride their brakes down the mountain. The ranger checked my front rotor a couple times as he couldn't believe the reading. He asked me if I used my brakes at all and I said, yeah to stop here!

Engine braking is a marvelous thing. Bet your MPG was sky high as well!

It has been saying next service in 8000 miles for the past 2000 + miles. Wouldn't it at least refresh every 50 or 100 miles? Am I expecting too much or is this just a regular thing with bmw?

CBS stands for Condition Based Service. So the counters change based on how you drive. I track my own maintenance because I follow the Lifetime Maintenance schedule, so YMMY
