Think again. See here:
"FIA Race Director Michael Masi has explained his perspective on the various incidents that took place in an action-packed Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday, which saw Lewis Hamilton win to level the championship with Max Verstappen.
Conversations between Masi and the pit walls of Red Bull and Mercedes, in which they were heard deliberating with the Race Director over the starting order for the following restart, were broadcast on Sunday during the red-flag stoppage for Mick Schumacher’s Lap 10 crash.
The Race Director explained why he had such conversations, adding that they are a frequent occurrence in Grands Prix weekends, saying: “It’s very much a normal discussion that happens regularly on a number of occasions and has [done] all year, and previously. I wouldn’t call it a deal, as from a Race Director’s perspective I have no authority to instruct the teams to do anything in that situation. I can give them an offer, [I have] the ability to do that but the choice is theirs.
“The stewards are obviously empowered to give penalties, but I can give them my perspective. That’s why I offered them the ability to give that position up. It was a result of the red flag that came about due to the incident at Turn 3. The priority with any red flag situation is A, to make sure the drivers are safe, and then to activate the marshals’ recovering with cleaning the track and so forth.
“So it probably seemed a bit elongated compared to normal, however it is very much a normal discussion that takes place. When I saw it happen at Turn 2, I immediately suggested to the stewards that I am going to give the opportunity [to Red Bull] to give that place back.
“The red flag obviously ensued very quickly thereafter and that was absolutely the priority before we got going again. Being as we were under the suspension, it was the ability to effectively correct that before we went racing again.”"

IMHO, he should state clearly FIA's position about Max gaining a lasting advantage off track, and this is what FIA recommends...... Otherwise FIA race control will refer the incident to the race stewards. **Period**

The tone and presentation just doesn't bode confidence or in control. Definitely doesn't sound good to the public.
I agree.
Masi also didn't have the situation properly sorted out.
He completly missed the fact that Ocon was in the mix as well.
RB had to ask him about Ocon's position.
He made a human error there, an honest mistake.

Is that enough to say Masi is "out of his depth" and that the FIA is a mess and shameful?

yes it was an honest mistake, but it added to the viewers impression that the whole thing sounded like amateur hour.

IMO, it really should have been done off air.

We are all human, mistakes happen.
However he made it sound like he was bartering on an open channel. Whether this goes on all the time or not is immaterial. That was ameteur hour.
He is unfit for that position IMO.

And yes I saw that article, prior to my posting my original comment.

A number individuals seem to be unnaturally preoccupied with Hamilton's wardrobe these days.

IMO, the reputation builds up after several incidents of how Masi handles the issues and presents himself as FIA. (e.g. sending marshals out to active green flag track or race resumes without making sure all marshals and equipment are off the track)

Maybe not out of his depth, but its a never ending learning process for him. There were a few times I recall (can't remember which incident) that he present himself with more ego rather than humble explanations.

Hamilton is a living F1 legend who deserves all respect. Of course he wears the clothes he likes.

But IMHO the FO statement that graced his back today rather shows insecurity.

His message could have been more powerful. Not something obvious like his hallmark handle "HAMMERTIME" or "MAXED OUT", but a subtle reference that he trusts bagging World Title #8 this weekend:
  • the infinity symbol
  • his "44" car number spelled in a way that it shows 4+4 (normal "4" and mirrored "4" back-to-back as an arrow pointing upwards)

I respect him for his driving prowess Don't care for anything else he espouses for beyond racing.

Actually surprising to me he would publicly wear that message, seems antithetical to the image he projects IMO. Not that I care what he wears.
