Vibration at 70mph - cracked propshaft!

Hi all

I've had a vibration running through the car between 60-70mph for a while now. Finally got fed up and booked it in to sytner, went for a test drive with the tech and he agreed was smthng abnormal...
Just had a call back saying it's the propshaft which 'appears to have cracked in a few places'!!!

Covered under my extended warranty and will be picking it up later

"between 60-70mph"

Fixed that for you !

Pleased to hear it was something definite and it's being dealt with.

back to the drawing board

vibration is worse than ever, will be going straight back in.

are there any suspension components I should ask them to have a look at? the vibration runs through the steering wheel and floor pan, at speed, its enough to cause tingling in my knee as i'm driving along. not good

After you have been driving for a while with the vibration, slow down gradually and check to see if there are any hot wheels (stuck caliper).

You could move wheels around to see if it is a wheel or tyre problem (defective tyre).

A cracked propshaft shouldn't cause a vibration, but why is/was it cracked?

A new propshaft makes the vibration worse! Can't be balanced when installed, particularly if more vibration than the faulty propshaft. Possibly radial run-out. I'd say more investigation in the drivetrain is needed.

Out of interest, is the vibration still in exactly the same speed range, or has it changed?

It's in the same speed range,

The tech that went on the test drive with me said he couldn't fault it - between 45-70+ now, it's going back in on Tuesday. It's a horrible vibration that goes through the steering wheels, you can feel it in the accelerator pedal, through both front seats (passenger seat physically shakes) the rear view mirror vibrates to the point it distorts the image being reflected back to me and after a long drive my knee actually hurts and my arm holding the wheel will go numb! Never ever had this before in the literally hundreds of thousands of miles I've done in the past

Could this possibly be caused by bad wheel bearings?
When i changed to my summer wheels a cpl of weeks ago i did have a good listen and i could hear a sound similar to marbles in a jar but it was in both fronts so i thought it was normal?

(I'm no expert so no sure what i was listening for!)

Is there anything i ought to advise them to look for on Tues?

I can't look at this without keep coming back to the new propshaft making it worse. The new part has changed something. Harmonics?

So you've changed wheel sets, I'm assuming from your comments, there was no difference from the wheel change. If so, that really eliminates wheels from the issue, unless something really unusual is going on.

Some models have a vibration/harmonic damper/absorber, something like 140 Hz, (there are different values), on the diff casing. When we've discussed driveline vibrations in the F10/11 models, I do wonder if this is part of the issue/solution. I'd be experimenting with changing its frequency, (I assume it is still there, if one is fitted). I'd try running without it, see it I could temporarily add mass to it, to change its frequency. See if it changes and/or makes a difference in the speed range you get the vibrations.

No difference from the wheelsets

The ones that are mounted at the moment have been road forced balanced (same as the winters were) by BMTR

I've compiled a list of links which ive emailed to the service advisor, differing opinions about worn shocks, worn top mounts, bushes, wheel bearings

I've done the 'shock absorber test' and the car does bounce an awful lot on the front end, i push down and i got at least two 'rebounds'

Nope
Mine settled down considerably after engine mounts and gearbox mounts were done, now tolerable although it is still there

Booked on Friday for the rear diff mounting to be done, may make it a bit better?

I feel it's down to the injectors for some reason as it's the whole engine which vibrates like this - unless it genuinely is characteristic of the car

@Apples12 I am interested in the engine mounts and gearbox mounts you've changed. Did you do this yourself or get a specialist to help? But also how much roughly did it cost?

I've got excessive engine vibration at standstill in traffic but also suffer from the vibration between 65-76mph (roughly).

Thanks in advance!

Hi

The engine mounts were done under warranty/goodwill by BMW park lane after a dealer charged me for work not done (proven by dashcan footage)

The gearbox mounting was a febi one which was relatively inexpensive (<£30) and cost £10 labour to have it fitted by my local independent, very easy to install if you have a lift and a means to support the gearbox while you swap them over

The rear diff mount made a marginal difference in the jerking feeling I used to get when letting go of the accelerator pedal although this may just be in my head.

Your vibration between 65-75 points more toward tyres, mine at that speed only disappeared after a good tyre shop road force balanced them and pointed out one wheel which was ever so slightly buckled (this was replaced ) and all was well

My new problem is lipped brake discs which is causing a brake judder which I really can't be arsed to change as it's not always there and brakes were only changed 10k miles ago!

Let us know how you get on
