Hi

Sorry to hear this, especially on your first bm as well. How did you find out the cut off is three months after your manufacturing date?

Regarding timing chain issues, I've argued my point on E90 forums previously. Timing chains snapping on N47 engines affects about 1% of these engines. Unfortunately those 1% of owners are understandably angry. However, anyone with even a remotely mechanical brain knows that the oil intervals for these cars is more-than-likely incorrectly specified by the manufacturer. 2 year oil intervals? Seriously? I change my oil at 9000 mile intervals or annually - and luckily annually comes first these days. My old E90 had 130,000 miles on the clock when I sold it, and it's still going strong. My current F11 is a miler, and likewise going excellently. Oil is cheap, timing chains/new engines are not.

Hi

Did they mention when changing it was on its way out

What year and model is yours?

Thanks

Sold it now but it was a 2010. They just changed it as it was noisy, didn't mention anything. I remember them saying it was £1500 worth of work though.

Hi

Thanks

Just a trying to paint a picture,

What was the mileage

Did you have it done under warranty

If so was it difficult to get them to do the work

Was it picked up during routine servicing

Did you have interval oil changes or by the on board computer

Did you drive the car hard or lightly

Thanks again

I'm really confused with this issue. I have 5.25d xdrive produced late 2013 (November). No bad sound, it shows 105K miles in clock. Oil change cycles has no problem, always done and will do properly. In the net, there are so many N47 timing chain issues. While I have no indication for any fault, why do I need to/have to change timing chain ? İs it commercial issue ? Also does the timing chain produced in November 2013 N47T engine suffer from same issue ? Is this revised/updated (I mean unsnapped version ) chain or not ?

I've replaced my 2001 E39 525d with a 2010 F11 520d, and I did that AFTER going through through all N47 timing chain related threads. Hope it wasn't a mistake...

Anyone had any issues on the N47T from 2014? I keep hearing about the chain issues but that’s my 3rd car with the N47 engine and I didn’t have any issues, knock wood.

The timing chain issue is supposed to be completely eliminated on cars built after October 2014. On the other hand, we've heard these kind of statements before...

N47 with 160k miles

Hello

new to the forum and new owner of a used 520d (60 plate) with just over 160k on the clock. After I bought the car did I discover the problem occuring with these engines. I havent noticed any weird sounds but I havent owned the car from day 1 so I wouldnt know if there is anything different. Is it possible that I wont need a replacement albeit the high mileage? How much do you reckon a repair would cost? Thank you in advance.

If you got the chain, guides, tensioners replaced as a precaution, it'd probably cost £1000-1500.

If the chain failed, the engine would require a full rebuild or replacement - so you could get an engine from a scrapper for £500, or a new engine from BMW for £6k - so the cost of repair could be very high or very low.

Depends how lucky you feel, really, and if you could face up to that sort of expense.

In your position, I'd get it inspected by an independent BMW specialist, and if it's all OK, then change the engine oil and filter every 8-10k miles at most - the 2 yr / 18k service interval is far too long.

Thank you for the answer. I will probably get it then checked before I go on with any repair.

Mind you, a proper check of the timing chain is an engine-out job (hence very expensive); if it's already out, you might as well change all parts Robbie mentioned as a precaution.

Has anyone recently had the timing chain changed and if so what mileage were you on?

I had timing chain changed Apr '18 at 102k miles. March 2011 built, which supposedly fixed the issue.

NOT.

Was it done under warranty

And how did the timing chain problem present?

Thanks

Nope.. bit of a drama it was noisy one day and half way driving back from Glasgow to London the slack in the chain cause a hole in the camshaft cover and starting spilling oil in the engine bay. The rest of the trip was on the back of a recovery truck.

It was turning but sounded horrible so I had it towed to a garage near Milton Keynes who replaced the timing chain (genuine BMW), camshaft cover, camshaft sensor etc. and provided me with some warranty on the timing chain.

Hi

Thanks for your reply

What was the mileage when this happened?

Was your servicing done as per idrive schedule and is it full dealer history?

Thanks
