Hi Guys, I apologize in advance fir the long post. Thanks a lot. lots of great info in this thread. I accidentally stumbled upon this n63 ccp and class action lawsuit settlement while searching for reasons my cabin semmled like burnt oil some times. After researching more info i called 1 of the 2 BMW dealers in columbus area. Scheduled airbag recall and also mentioned that car has been consuming a lot of oil lately. I have 2011 x5 50i 81k miles. I dropped my car Thursday morning 10 am, got a call from the dealer at 4:30 saying they have submitted the claim to BMW (didn't say what claim etc) i was at work and in the middle of something so forgot to ask what claim and what was the consumption test results. This morning when I called the dealer up to check he mentioned they submitted the failed oil consumption tests to BMW, Multiple places oil is leaking, valve cover gaskets, valve stems. He mentioned BMW had approved the Engine replacement and my cost would be $8000 since BMW will cover 50% of the engine replacement cost. I told him not to start the replacement and just fix the recall airbags as I needed more time to research.
I went over to pickup the car and taled to SA. asked him to show me the estimate sheet. Basically they are charging $5100 for new engine and any parts needed with it + $5500 for turbos and parts+ $3300 labor + $800 for engine bay partition replacement + sales tax for a total of about $16000 which seems really really high. Based on 81000 miles tier BMW will cover 55% of cost so even after declining the engine bay partition my cost would be$7000. I declined the engine bay partition as i can get there parts cheap and install myself. Im really confused if i should get the engine replaced or not as my cost would be about $7000. The car as it sits has kbb value 6k to 8k for trade in or 8k to 10k for private party. Not sure if i should just spend $7000 and drive the car 3 to 4 more years or just don't get the engine replaced, keep topping up oil and drive it till it dies(could die in a month or year or more). $7000 is a lot of money to put in repairs for a car that's worth about the same. What do you guys think? Any opinions? Btw after getting out of this dealership, i called the 2nd one and they said my cost would be close to 10k. Later called an indy and he said I should get it done as 7k seems reasonable. I still think $15000 dollars for the resident the dealer wants to charge is gill retail and way too expensive. |

The Bang Settlement suit timeline has passed and BMW NA has a percentage formula that they will provide some funds towards a new motor based on the miles of the vehicle. Based on 81K which I had 102K it will be very very little. Out West they quoted approx. 12K to replace motor which is quite a lot of money all around. This is only my experience, I had multiple repairs early on (hoses, turbos, oil consumption issues) on my 2011 550xi MSport of which some BMW covered under warranty and some that I had to pull out of my own pocket. Each time I took the vehicle in the service techs always gave the look of ohhh ...550xi 2011, they know this motor is problematic. Frankly this year model of the N63 was the first year in this vehicle and has a huge record and history of issues hence the oil lawsuit which is a cheap fix for them. When I approached BMW NA they were of little help and I have vehicle that motor is shot and am going to make my return on parting the vehicle out which you will get far greater dollars than throwing more money in repairs. Again my opinion, save your money and don't sink it in to a vehicle that will continue to have issues !

I have a question. I have been searching and trying to find an answer with no luck. Lots of threads to read through regarding the N63 replacement.
I have a 2012 550i which had the engine replaced 5k miles ago by a local BMW dealership. My question is, did BMW install an n63 that is identical to the original n63 which blew. Or did they install an updated version similar to the n63tu? |

I would definitely ask them to let you know if this a current year (2020 per se) of that motor or simply a new N63 from lets say that model year. If so this motor is problematic and BMW knows it. Save yourself a lot of grief put a for sale sign on it. There are many other BMW's with stronger track records.

We are going through this and so far the cost is $6100 for new injectors and few more things. They are going to replace the engine and I will be responsible for 45% which is roughly $4500. |

I had the seals done almost 2 years ago and no consumption at all. Hopefully someone makes it right. Good luck man.

I'm changing my oil next week b/c I just did a bunch of work (Turbo rebuilt/upgrade, TMAP sensors, diverter valves, catless DP's, {non performance and not relevant to oil} plus M Sport bumpers, diffuser, splitter, side skirts, demon eyes and on and on) so I'll be sure to report back on what my mileage is.
I know my next change will be closer to 2,500 miles due to trips to 'Mexico' on the weekends and really running her hard for a few pulls. I'm running Liqui-Moly MolyGen 5w-40, the weird green stuff. I was waiting on Sergeys Oil Cooler Valve to be in stock but since it's winter I will just wait until spring and get the oil done. How are you liking that cooler you got? Temps looking good?

I put in 5w40 synthetic the other day and hope that the heavier oil with the cooler oil temperatures minimize any oil burning. |

engine replacement
I have a x5 50i which burns a quart of oil every 500 miles. It has 108k on the odometer. The dealer in Alexandria says an engine replacement is 17,000$. Anyone else have an idea on what this should cost, I called another dealer and they said $15,308. I see in this forum some people are quoting 10k not 17

I have a 2011 550i xdrive and the p.o. had the engine replaced by bmw at 87k miles. It now has 147k and its smoking after idling. Has anyone heard of the replacement engine having the same issue? Is the replaced engine warrantied at all?

My replacement engine has a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty and think this is a common warranty.

I have been following the N63 engine suit but unfortunately didn't come across this thread until recently. My 2011 550i Xdrive didn't qualify for the new engine because of mileage but the valve stem repair was never offered. My vehicle was under 131k at the time and I have now circled back with BMW,N.A with a complaint. My vehicle failed the oil test but I had to bring up the class action to even get that done at the time. BMW N.A. contacted the dealer to find out why my case was handled this way. I will let you know the outcome. I just need the valve stem repair that I am entitled to. |

Does anyone have information about what is covered when BMWNA agrees to put in a new N63 engine? Or in other words, is this a crate engine replacement or a long block replacement? Do they include new turbos, starter motor, and alternator? Or should one expect they will be swapping out old to new?

Bumping this thread up...where would a 2016 550i fall now a days under diagnostics and tests that infer an engine replacement is needed? Outside of warranty, obviously...

Best bet would just take it to the dealer and complain to them about the oil burning. They should do a oil consumption test and verify your vin to check if your qualify. I have N63 and it was burning a quart of oil in a 100 mile. I just brought my car to the dealer and they told my valve stems were bad and it was free of charge (53000k mile), till they broke my timing chain guide and replaced free of charge after.

2013 550I engine seized with less than 60k miles
So, I bought the 550I new in 2013 - a special order as I wanted a six speed. It was delivered in February 2013. Of course, it had the dreaded N63 engine.
When the care package was made available I took the car into the dealership immediately. I love this car. ItÂ’s been maintained regularly and oil has been added between services when the warning light has come on. A few months ago I started getting battery issues and assumed it was because I was only driving short distances during the winter hours and therefore, was getting drained. The fact that the fans continued to run after powering down the car due to the turbos needing to be cooled down didnÂ’t help. I started charging the battery overnight every few days. A month ago, the car wouldnÂ’t start. I called triple A and had the battery replaced. The car still wouldnÂ’t start so it was towed to the dealership where upon inspection I was told the engine was seized and would need a new one at a cost of 20k. I contacted BMW NA as I felt they should pay for the new engine as 1) the car had less than 60,000 miles on it, 2) the known issue with the N63 engine and the class action suit. After escalation at BMW and 4 weeks later the dealership was told to provide the engine oil level plus other data. The dealership drained the oil and it was full as I had recently had an oil change. Unfortunately, they couldnÂ’t perform other tests because the engine was seized. In less than 12 hours I was informed by the dealership that BMW would not cover a thing as they needed the tests to performed on the car with the engine running. Any thoughts on how I should move forward would be appreciated as clearly, BMW should be responsible for this issue. Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post. |
