Can’t see why it would hurt to open the hood. It’s a combination of heat and time that drives out the elastomers (softeners) that cause the plastics to loose their pliability and embrittle. It probably makes more of a difference in the summer.

I found ecs sells a low temp 90C thermostat kit with new temp sensor and some coolant for $132...

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-assemble...BoCpWkQAvD_BwE
The oem thermostat is a 105c dme controlled thermostat. Which as far as I can tell is the same thermostat bmw has used on all bmw v8s since at least the n62 and a lot of other engines. Anyway since the car computer can command it open earlier than 105c some cars operate below 105c in performance modes. My x5m never goes above 100c as an example with the stock thermostat.

Anyway most of these aftermarket recalibrated low temp thermostats are set at 95c (they advertise 90c) for full open. The reason being is many bmws will throw an error and a check engine light if they stay at 90c. Some are actually 90c supposedly the Hamburg tech ones but you risk throwing a code for low coolant temp.

For reference I’ve installed one on a n62 that I purchased from eBay. Before install the engine ran at 105-108c. After install it was 98-100c. So it makes a difference but it won’t be a 15 degree drop like they advertise.

With that said I plan to do this mod on my x5m and 550i. It will lower the fuel economy but hopefully lower repair bills offset the cost of fuel.

Fuel economy drops because of more combustion heat transfer to the cylinder walls instead of driving the piston down. In general gasoline engines run most efficiently at around 110c. But lower temps make more power.

Is there a work-around like a CPU mod to stop the system from throwing an error?

Hope you're not trying to fool Kommiefornya's emissions Nazi's. I got a failure because I had the wrong CARB sticker for my car (even though the engines were identical in every way save the logo on the engine cover!). They know exactly what to look for and probably every trick; they're trained well.

Sure, for emissions component not ready, but not necessarily for an under temp error.

It’s a good question why no tunners command a lower operating temp for these map controlled thermostats. But then again most tunes are Purchased from one source.

I did buy a low temp thermostat on my s63 x5m and it sits at 93c now.

I would think custom tuner should be able target lower temp or change threshold for kft mode

But if you have emissions test in your state, tune can't help you pass inspection. All they can do is a soft delete, no different than JB4 or BM3 would when clearing the light. And it's a felony for tuners to do anything different.

Just putting this out there, not saying that you're stating the opposite or anything like that!

Sold by bmw, one owner and 2 service records first one at 39k miles regular maintenance. maintenance by bmw. Build date "10/13")

Hit me with all the info!

Would like owners with N63tu to give a brief guidance about their ownership with their N63tu

I do oil changes every 6k or so and never have to add oil between changes. BM3 tuned for the last 12k miles, runs 11.7 int he 1/4.

i have a '16 550 w/ 23k miles. I change the oil every year or every 6k miles. i would recommend a blackstone oil analysis every few years. they're inexpensive (like $30) and give great peace of mind. I have yet to have any issues with my engine. i am also a very conservative driver, all oem, don't dog it but always appreciate a highway or interstate on/off ramp. i also believe in popping or cracking the hood to let some of that hot air out in the warmer months.

Keep fresh oil in it, keep up with your Maintenance, put good fuel in it, keep up with fluid exchanges and replacements, address issues and make a checklist and do not ignore even small issues especially if it is a leak, and lastly don't go crazy on the engine when cold, (let her warm up to temp before you give it a rip) Please enjoy your N63TU and if you take good care of your Engine and transmission, you will have many, many years of enjoying it. I was very close considering an N63TU! Congrats! Educate yourself as much as possible on your car so you will enjoy it that much more!
