It was influenced by vacuum and use of the brakes would usually trigger it, and a throttle blip would often clear it. So every time I came to a stop this buzz would start.

I know the sound instantly now, and exactly what part it is. I guess mine never got to a point where they completely failed to operate or threw a CEL. All replaced under factory or extended warranty - I never even looked for stored codes.

I got tired of these going out and having to drive 50mins away to take it the dealer to get them replaced. I knew these pressure convertor goes bad so I order them from FCPEURO. They have lifetime warranty on them. I order OEM ones so once they go out I just order a new one and send the old one back. Within a few days I get my money back.

Oh! Right! FCP's warranty. I forgot about that. This is a perfect use.

So - are the latest Pierburg ones from FCP failing in the same way still? i.e. no fixed design? I've debated ordering one and having it on the shelf since I figure it's going to happen again.

That's a great idea! Yeah, I'll probably order from FCPEURO and take care of it on my own. What part number did you order and has the problem returned?

For those of you with this problem, are your engines stock or tuned? I am tuned with BM3 now but the 1st one went out before I added boost. The second one also started buzzing before I went with BM3. I am sure increasing boost is wearing them down faster.

I just installed MHD two days ago. All of my failures were stock, and not driven hard. I don't think that the failure mode should be affected much by tune, but could be affected by heat exposure under the hood.

The parts number I order is 11747649407. It has been 8 months now since I replaced it. But before this one it lasted about a year and a half. I'm still all stock beside a K&N air filter. Normal daily driving beside pushing it hard once in a while.

ezaircon4jc Were you able to find the letter regarding the pressure converter warranty? Did you get one for your 2014 as well or only the 2012? I assume this applies to all N55 PWG cars but I couldn't find a TSB for the warranty extension. Thanks in advance

You know, things went downhill after I made that post (open-heart on top of the rotator-cuff surgery!) and I completely forgot. I will try and get at it tomorrow. I did not get one for the 2014.

Interesting. What's the production date of your 2012? I think there was a part# change effective 6/2012. I'd be curious what the difference is in the part that it cannot be applied to all build dates of PWG. I also wonder if it would affect any tunes like MHD or BM3 if something operates a little different between the PWG variants.

My build date is 4/2011 or 5/2011 (different tools have different dates) and it says I have to use the older one.

Haven't looked yet, but the PD is, IIRC, 9/11.

No worries. Hope you are doing better now. Can only enjoy these awesome cars (and deal with their issues ) when health comes first.

I had mines replaced under warranty and 8 months later it went out again and unfortunately I was out of my factory warranty. Purchased the new OEM revised version and installed it myself.

The letter also stated that if the pressure converter was replaced anytime before they would reimburse your money back. To get reimburse, I would have to provide a shop labor invoice with the date that the work was done. Since I did the work myself and purchased the OEM part do I still qualify to get reimburse?
whats the part number for the OE revised version for a 550?

Pressure converter buzzing again! This one only lasted about 7 months. The OEM part and the Pierburg part seems to be the same - are there any other manufacturers that might have solved this issue?

What is the labor like to replace this? Curious as my 2012 is past the 120k warranty extension. No issues right now.

I don't know the labor rates, but it's fairly straightforward if you want to attempt a DIY. Here is a video I created this past summer that shows me replacing it on my 2014 535i:

Like others have suggested, I purchased mine from FCPEuro so I can take advantage of the lifetime warranty.

Edit: here is a video showing the noise I heard that prompted the replacement of mine and also a short clip after the replacement:
