What are the major differences? Are they plug and play without errors on pre-LCI cars? I ask because the E60 LCI cars required a different wiring harness for the taillights.

For PJinCA & for others who are wondering, it's plug n play, no coding of any sort or additional work required.
I've also noticed that the LCI signals are more pronounced from 3/4 angle, while preLCI signals are more directed towards the rear of the car, even though it's ever so slightly so. Brightness overall is DEFINITELY brighter on the LCI's due to the type of LED reflector that is in the units. LCI Left, PreLCI Right- |
