Self insuring 2015 M5 - how much cash reserves?

Hi all,

Recently picked up my first BMW 2015 M5 w/ 29k miles beginning of this month. I've been considering getting a warranty but I'd be looking at a little over $5k for a platinum coverage. I like the piece of mind for any major stuff not maintenance however my concern is what kind of experience I will have when it is time to actually file a claim.

After my first week of ownership my wife killed the battery and I lost interior audio shortly after that.

It currently sits at the BMW shop waiting on parts as I am having to replace a faulty head unit which might have been shorted when the battery died and I am replacing the battery since it was from 2017. Head unit is $2800 and battery is $500.

For those of you that have went the self insured route without a warranty what would you say would be a good reserve amount to have for potential repairs down the road?

Option 1: have reserve money for future repairs - if so how much?

Option 2: purchase warranty

Option 3: purchase warranty + cash reserves

Appreciate any input!

My 2 cents, $5k is a pretty good deal to cover an M5. I paid $4500 for RPM Plus platinum coverage. I'd do the warranty. Send pics, that's a killer car with low miles!

That's a lot to replace a head unit. Are they certain it is bad? They rarely go bad. A used head unit from any F series from 2014-2016 will work on your car. They typically run about $150 or less. If you are not good at coding, someone can code it remotely for about $120.

Extended warranty is always recommended on any V8 BMW. Many components will fail like ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel injectors, high pressure fuel pump and sometime rod bearing or vanos.

Initially thought it was the B&O amp. I checked all fuses but all was ok. So dealer checked amp as well determined it was part # 65129325979 that was the issue.

Appreciate the advice I will strongly consider the warranty.

A warranty is not "always recommended" for a BMW V8. I never do, and neither do lots of others. I've been running an N63TU in a 650 out of warranty since June, 2019 - nearly 3 and a half years. If I had a warranty, my covered claims to date would total exactly $0. And I don't view it as just a one-car proposition. I have saved by not buying warranties on every car and appliance I have ever owned. I am so far ahead that if my transmission blows up tomorrow I am still way ahead.

Super pumped! The color is pyrite brown. Previous owner didn't even have the windows tinted so I got it done and put on black grills and RW carbon lip already.

Gorgeous ride
I hope you are in a state that don't require a front plate
Would be a sin to put a front plate on that car

Thank you unfortunately in Texas they do. I was considering picking up some paint matched bumper plugs but from online photos i find it a bit tacky with 4 screw holes to plug.

Do you have bumper plugs?

Kommiefornyastan also requires a front plate. I haven't had one on in over 20 years with no problems.

I remember reading a post a long time ago where the "Poster" stated nobody was going to bother you about not having a front plate unless they were stopping you for something else --- and because you were being a pain, they would ticket you for everything they saw.

I got my 2014 v8 3 months back under 37k miles. It's super cool , but once I bought it I have spent 1000$ for repair then my rest catalytic sensor is gone but luckily it is covered by bmw 10 yrs warranty . Now my drive shaft is cracked it 700$ worth repair but the coverage didn't cover it , when I called them and enquired they said they consider it as pre existing . But am still continuing the coverage it's been 2 months now, just a piece of mind nothing else . What I heard from others they mostly don't cover . But cars like v8 u never really sure what's coming …

I tried going without a plate on my current 650 but that lasted about a month until I got a ticket while parked at a meter (with time left on it).

Very clean M5! Love the CCB's and the individual color. Where in Texas are you located? If you're in the Dallas area you need to see Matt at Cedar Performance for tuning if you're thinking about going that route
