Hi.
I have a 2010 model 520d (F10) and a 2016 X3 MSport (F25) both are nearing their oil change time.

Previously I have used genuine BMW 5w30 LL04 oil but now I am getting a good deal for Castrol at my local store. So can you please advise me if I can use Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL for my vehicles.

See pics.

No, that is not even recommended let alone approved for BMW.

Note the lack of the words "BMW" on any of the back text. You should only use BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approved oils.

The TIS lists posted a almost certainly out of date. I see oils on the LL-01 list which lost LL-01 when it was reissued for 2018 with updated requirements (for the N20). It's not a bad guide, but there are no 0W oils on the current 2018 LL-01 list, for instance and they are shown in the post above.

The 2018 update was to revise LL-01 to account for newer B series engines. The posted list is still valid for N series engines.

According to what I've read, the 2018 update was to revise LL-01/4 to use test sequences based on the N20 as the standard test engine instead of the N52, and to account for all of the "special needs" discovered on the N20 platform with the timing chain equipment. Thus making the changes potentially very relevant to N series engines.

The TIS recommends enclosure 9 for the N20 engine as of 2/2019 (see screen shot below). And though it can use LL-01, LL-01 FE, LL-04, LL-12 FE, & LL-14 FE+…it’s LL-17 FE+ that is the preferred recommendation. And see the footnotes below for LL-04, LL-12 FE, and LL-14 FE:

1) For petrol engines, only BMW Longlife-04 and BMW Longlife-12 FE oils are permitted in Europe (EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein). They must not be used outside this area.

5) BMW Longlife-14 FE+ oils are only approved for petrol engines in Europe (EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein), USA and Canada. They must not be used outside this area.

For clarity, I am saying that I read that BMW's LL-01 certification testing process was updated in 2018 to use the N20 for the certification test engine instead of the N52, and to address lubrication concerns which surfaced with the N20. I was never saying that LL-01 is the preferred oil for the N20.

I'll have to dig to find a source. I only mentally took note of the fact as it was being discussed wherever it was that I saw this. At the time I did not save links to use later in a debate...

A takeaway from this is that any oil with a 2018 LL-01 certification is going to be a VERY good oil, and that LL-01 is not a 20 year old spec from 2001 because it has been updated several times. Even some great oils lost LL-01 certification (as revised in 2018) because they couldn't meet the standard.

If you're oil shopping, and your engine is approved/preferred for LL-01, and you are not planning on going a thin "FE" route, THEN you can rest assured that anything which has a 2018 LL-01 certification on it is going to be very good oil. That is not to say that oils which are unable to meet the updated 2018 revision are necessarily "bad", or that they cannot be used in your older BMW engine without any problems.

One of the best oil threads that I've found.

I have a 2012 528i N20 and finding the correct oil documentation has been tough.

From this thread though, I believe LL17+ is recommended in 0w20 (SP). Probably due to trying to prevent LSPI and for fuel economy.

Thanks!
