Messed up with jump starting 2013 535i

I have a 2013 BMW 535i and it ended up getting stuck at an intersection due to a dead battery. I had someone stop and help and they tried to jump start it from the trunk battery while still connected. I heard a bunch of ticks coming from the engine compartment so I told him to stop. Ended up getting the car towed home and purchased a new battery. I installed the battery, all of the lights come on but the car will not start (starter not engaging). After further research I realized that was not the proper way to attempt a jump start. How bad did I potentially mess up the vehicle?

How did you conclude that the battery was the culprit? Was it old age? Or did the battery die due to the alternator taking a dump and causing it to do all the heavy lifting? Any warnings like the battery light come on? If yes, that is a charging system warning which usually points to the alternator or charging system as the culprit or issue.

When you replaced the battery…did you replace it with like kind (specs) or did you change specs? If changed….did you code the car with the new battery specs? Also did you register the new battery? Registration is required anytime a new battery is installed.

The guy who stopped look like he knew what he was doing? Reverse polarity and you can certainly kill a few modules for sure.

What was the first issue that stranded you? does your car has auto start on/off?

What you describe ('all lights turn on but starter not engaging'), could be that the starter failed indeed --and it was not the battery--, you will hear clicks in the front but nothing happens.

(My starter failed and the symptoms were exactly as above)
