BMW F10 tax
I believe the new 5 series BMW M Sport from 2020 and onwards would be applicable to a £500 yearly tax.
Im currently paying £30 a year on my 65 plate F10 M Sport but going for another 5 series means the higher tax rate. Does BMW offer any discounts when purchasing a car with them to offset this type of cost or is it a matter of going for a lower spec car or another series as long as the price is under £40K? |

They changed the tax rates in 2017.
First year: based on C02, varies from £0 to £2175. A 520d would be about £215 for the first year. Second year onwards - everyone pays the same, so £140 for a hybrid, £150 for petrol or diesel. Luxury car tax: If the list price is over £40000, you pay an additional £325 in years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. After that you pay the same as everyone else. So it doesn't matter how good at negotiating you are, it's the list price of the car, including factory extras, that counts for the luxury car tax. Yes, it hurts that a new 520d costs a lot more than an older one to tax, but them's the rules for now. |

At least you've gone into it with your eyes open. I know of a lot of people who still get a shock.
The cheapest way to avoid it is to stick with the car you have.

Does this tax only apply to the original owner who bought the car as a brand new one or are you liable to it also if you buy the car as used???

The additional tax is to be paid for the first 5 car tax renewals - no matter if it's all one owner, 6 owners, or anything else. Note that if a car is SORN or untaxed (while on a forecourt, for example) then the clock pauses - so if a car has been for sale for a year then it won't have magically used up one year of that renewal

Same here. Outrageous costs to “upgrade” in every way. So I’m sticking with my 2015 535D F11 M Sport fully loaded with options still at 62k miles.
