What would be the next step in DSLR from the Nikon D90?

I am in the market for a DSLR and had my mind made up on the D90 but thought that if I spend a few hundred more I may be able to find something that I may be able to 'grow into'. Any advise?

D300 or D300s, but those are like tanks (strong body & water prof) great for outdoors/wildlife shoot. D700 is great for indoor shooting because of the high ISO settings
so it all depends on what you're doing with the camera.

I was considering the 300s but the price is a bit of a stretch. Does Canon offer anything more advanced then the Ninon D90 in a similar price range?

If the price on the D300s was a bit of a stretch according to the OP, then the Canon 7D is also going to be out of his price range.

Looking at Adorama:

Nikon D300s - $1,542
Canon 7D - $1,699

There really isn't anything between the Nikon D90 and the D300s/7D class. The only Canon camera that is in a similar price class to the D90 is the Canon 50D. The 50D has a better chassis in my opinion, but it doesn't do any sort of video recording. If that is important to you (it isn't at all to me...), then the 50D is out. If you don't care about video capability, then the Canon 50D would be a great choice.

Be sure to handle which ever cameras you narrow it down to. Focus on the grip and controls, and how they feel to you. I don't like Canon's rear sub-dial arrangement, much preferring Nikon's dial control layout. Canon's placement is especially an issue for me, since I look through the viewfinder with my left eye. My nose sits right on that dial on a Canon....

The only other thing I'll say, and I'm a Nikon guy, is that Canon's top end glass is generally cheaper than Nikon's. Canon also typically offers rebates for their lenses and flashes, while Nikon doesn't. I see used Canon 70-200 IS f2.8's going for $1200-$1300 used on CL, while Nikon's sells for $1575-$1700.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will hold off to see if their are any Christmas/BoxingDay sales. May be able to squeak into a 300s.
