It has been here since 2004. We call it the 1er.
Hahaha fair point.

But I'm going to say as Mr Average who couldn't justify spending the money on an i8 etc, the thing that attracts me to BMW is the practicality and performance combination... This appears to be eroding in front of our eyes.

The 335d estate (tourer) mixed high performance with a proper size boot and was the best of everything... This has now become x drive only (why not have kept the option?)

The M135i has a decent boot, RWD and demon performance.... Next we hear the 1ers are all going FWD (why get rid of the formula for one of the best hot hatches available?)

The real unique niche products (USP) that draw me to BMW (excluding the superb M cars) are making me think "well why not an Audi next time?".. "Or even a corolla"

When will the X7, 9 series, CSLs debut?

I disagree. I think there are very exciting times ahead for this brand as a whole. These projects will allow the M division to keep making the awesome cars they are making. This is the future of the automotive world, folks. As a business, you have to adapt. BMW will continue to make drivers cars, no doubt.

They will all be here by 2020.
The X7 is first though in mid-late 2017.

The i8 is a cool technology exhibit and looks absolutely beautiful on some angles (and hideous in others...but looks are subjective). The i8 really does seem like a car from the future. As for how it drives, I wouldn't know as I've never been behind the wheel of one and I wouldn't mind driving one. It almost seems like a concept car that the masses are allowed to have granted they have 140K USD, I love that aspect most except the 140K USD part.

So SCOTT26, What makes it so special that its name could not be mixed in with the masses we know as the comparatively priced AMG GTS, R8, and possibly even the NSX (I hate this new NSX)? What makes it so immune to getting its name tarnished when a half as expensive Macan Turbo inches over it? What if we change the name Macan Turbo to F82 M4 would that be more acceptable? I guess the big question is...how do you propose for the i8 to be compared to other cars so that people aren't going to be "clueless": in terms of performance? in terms of looks? in terms of price? in terms of technology (please don't give specifics here because if that were the case, no car should be compared to any other car)?

Also, how is the next Z4 coming along?

Weird; based on the current number scheme, wouldn't the "grand coupe" version of the 7 series technically be an 8 series? Similar to how the 6 series uses the 5 series platform, but win a different body.

The 9er is developed alongside the next Rolls-Royce Phantom which will be the worlds most advanced luxury car when it debuts in 2017.
The ability to develop alongside the new Phantom means advances in material application and engineering is entirely cost effective.
Although its architecture is derived from the 7er there will be a lot more application of material technology over the 7er.

The i8 is the "What if?" Solution that no one has yet to answer.
The brief was to envelope yourself in a legislative world where the sports car concept demise was imminent.
What would you do to prolong the concept?

The i8 is the answer in regards to using the lowest expectations possible but inheriting the new sustainable philosophy. The genius of i8 is that it is here but it also illustrates future potential which will be explored. It is what it offers for the money, it looks a million dollars and provides the same kind of technology and construction you would find for a million dollars yet it costs a fraction of a million dollars. It is unrivalled in its selective segment but BMW feel i8 is in a class of its own because it dares to be different. It is a showcase of innovation over speed, its design is adapted perfectly for its purpose plus it looks like something someone predicting the future in the year 3000 would come up with but its here now.
Many people dislike the i8 because it is not... But that is the mission of the i8 it is not. It is intentionally not...
But those who do get behind the wheel eventually have a change of faith. The i8 has untapped potential but this is the beginning when someone has to develop the wheel.
The i8 is a Brave New World when everyone else is afraid to step out the door.

The new Z5 is coming along nicely. Think BMWi individuality for sports cars.
Its sharp, futuristic and unlike anything else.

Yeah, because the 7 series has done a real good job of that, right? Amd let's not forget how great the 8 series was compared to the SL. And BMW still doesn't have anything to answer AMG's super/sub super car coupes (SLS and GT). And let's not forget it was Mercedes that started this whole "4 door coupe" thing that BMW has now taken off with.

The 7er is doing an exceptional job with the new generation receiving plaudits as well as strong early sales since introduction in October.
True the 8er did not realise its potential, unfortunately the late eighties early nineties economic crisis killed the 8er Cabrio as well as the M8 Coupe and a re-engineered 8er Coupe with the M8s B Pillar which was being overseen by Wolfgang Reitzle. But look at the SL now and its a mess visually.

BMWs specialised cars like the M4 GTS is more than capable of keeping up with the AMG GT. Although the new Z car has potential to match it as does the i8 and still be underweight than the AMG.

Mercedes might be the manufacture who started the modern day fascination with the four door coupe. But you have to remember that the E30 3er turned from a 2dr to a 4dr as well as other German and non-German models.

The BMW 9er was originally conceived under Wolfgang Reitzle who ordered development of a V16 engine which is found under an E32 7er code named Project Goldfish. He envisioned a vehicle far out of the comfort zone for rival Mercedes-Benz. Unfortunately it was another victim of the economic crisis that killed the 8er.

The 9er is not a Coupe but a Sedan for the luxury plus segment above the S-Klasse and 7er. You could say it was aimed at the Maybach but with a BMW drivers philosophy but with extra individuality and more exclusivity.
The Maybach is all about the rear, it is more to be driven than drive.

Unfortunately the stupid of the stupid of today's Noveau Riche assholes drive one which is just to show how much money they have. They do look ridiculous driving a car which is intended merely to be chauffeur driven.
The 9er will be a BMW you can drive as well as be driven.

BMW has on-the-shelf V16, but they also have an experimental V16 hybrid which is being investigated and further developed. Whether it will be considered for production is not known at this stage.

I don't really see the point. I would rather see a luxury oriented 2 door coupe. Something that competes with the s class coupe.

Well, if competing with Corollas was your goal since 2004, then FWD is indeed the way to go for the "1er". Wonder why it took you 12 years to realise that!

In other words, the "Noveau Riche assholes" won't look so stupid showing off their money driving the 9 series? Way to insult your potential customers.

I am talking about Kim and Kanye. They drive a Maybach S600.

The problem is, that those million dollars hypercars use the hybrid technology with the purpose to go faster than what a combustion only engine can provide. While the i8 uses the same tech but in a lesser scale, it uses it to be more efficient. Which doesnt make too much sense in a sportscar imo. Fact is, the i8 is outperformed in every way possible by other sportscar of its price bracket.

I understand it's futuristic and very technological, but imo it was used in the wrong way for the i8. It should've been used to make it outperform those cars instead of being more economical than them.

I really hope BMW has something more performance oriented in their plans as sportscar goes.
