Lightbulb Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #19: CONTROLLED LIGHT

Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #19: CONTROLLED LIGHT
________________________________________
RULES:

1. Any interpretation of the theme that falls within Bimmerpost.com rules is welcome.
2. You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image.
3. One submission per contest.
4. Images must be no larger than 800px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 800px for the poll.
5. All contestants must host their own pictures (which includes hosting them on bimmperpost).
6. All images must have a title.
7. While post processing in Photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photo-chopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.

THEME:

a scene or frame where you control AND MODIFY all the light needed to expose the photograph. it doesn't have to be artificial light, but you do have to control all aspects of light in the scene (natural light is okay as long as you are controlling it or modifying it in some way). with one stipulation: no on-axis artificial light sources. meaning, don't use the built-in flash on your camera nor mount a flash onto your camera's hotshoe to light the scene. do not just flip the switch on a ceiling fan = uber FAIL. do not just capture available light!! and i may leave entries subject to my discretion so that all entries are of equal effort and creativeness to ensure use of modified and controlled light. if that's okay with you. ;]
all themes are open as long as these criteria are met.

you do NOT need fancy flashes/strobes to do this!! you can control natural light, or lighting fixtures with varies things (wax paper, linens, bodies....).

*I reserve the right to enforce these standards as necessary.

Be creative, have fun, dont get hurt

IMPORTANT DATES:

Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than Sunday, January 17th at MIDNIGHT EST.

The poll will commence shortly thereafter.

Light. Shoot.

if i got the dates wrong, let me know. i'm exhausted.

off-camera flash is good. Built-in or shoe mounted not good.

Sounds like a cool theme. I've never played around with light before so this will give me a chance to mess with it.

theres no canon flash that can be used remotely without either having 2 flashes, or a wireless flash unit attached

i believe some of the nikon ones let u use them wirelessly w/o the need for the extra unit or a second master flash...

(correct me if im wrong...)

I believe you are correct. I think you need a receiver or something like that no? I know that the 580 EX II can be used as a master unit but it needs to be connected via wire to the camera or wirelessly via a receiver. The 430 EX II can be used as slaves to the 580 EX II. That's about all I know about those kind of stuff as I normally don't use flash or I would use the hotshoe mounted ones.

Depends on the Nikon. My D300's built in flash will work as a commander and fire my SB-600 remotely. The built in can be set to provide no light on the subject too. If your camera doesn't have a built in or it won't work as a commander, you will have to creative. But it isn't flash, it is about controlling the light. Use bounce screens, diffusers or scrims, etc.

I did see 3 SB-900's in the used case for $370. Hmmmm, what better excuse to buy equipment than a contest!!

The new Canon 7D has wireless flash control.

You've just made me feel bad for not having a 7D.
But yeah I left that out. The 7D is a very fine camera. Wish I had the money for it.

It's a combo on the lighting source. I left the high beams on the ATV pointed at the closer trees on the right so that the onboard flash wouldn't pick up the further trees on the left. It was the "blue moon" but I moved. . .

So flash is ok if off camera? - How about if flash is altered by custom diffusers/reflectors etc?

as long as it's not on camera and on-axis.
glad to see everyone excited. :]

let's see some stuff!

you don't have to use flash/strobes.

you can't just turn on a light source, though. you need to control it and modify it.

Excuse all the questions - but what if you use natural light which is blocked by something in order to create an effect? Backlighting etc

you can't just catch natural light in a cool setting/situation - you have to control how it got there.

ok - so natural light backlighting is no good. No way to control the sun!

not necessarily...the first easy and creative thing that comes to my mind is arranging items to create shadows.
