I was thinking the same. Seems like it just eliminates the entire climb from driver's side grill duct up and over the engine, and reduces it to just directly above the inlet which with the heatshield could have good potential.

Do this intake require a sensor relocalization?

I think the design is great, but I'm wondering about the wiring and plumbing. Such as the crank case vent line, the evap breather line, and the MAF relocation that it seems it will need. There's no mention of any of that on the MST listing. If they can prove that their design is superior to the rest and have dyno's to back it up, then I'd be a buyer for sure! It would significantly clean up the engine bay as well! Again, I'm really liking this and love the fact that a manufacturer like MST went outside the box and is giving us a "revolutionary" design of an intake. However, at that ballpark price, we were told by aFe that we'd get 30WHP with their intake... which clearly wasn't true (if I recall, it made about as much power as the stock N55 airbox with a K&N panel filter but at a fraction of the aFe intake's cost). At that price range, I'd want more information. So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing reviews about this product prior to spending that kind of money on an intake. Do you think you can share this idea with them? Thanks!

I really don’t think an aftermarket intake on a fuel injected, forced induction vehicle is going to do anything other than look cool and make noise. If the stock intake is a bottleneck, sure...but is that the case? Without proof that this improves something that needs improving, this is basically throwing a GTR or VTEC sticker on your car.
However, the manufacturer isn’t claiming a hp/tq improvement either. |

Mods that improve airflow efficiency are nice, but I want to see data backing that up. And I mean repeatable, not explainable by margins of error on a dyno. Otherwise, this is a mod for looks and sound...which is perfectly fine. And again, the manufacturer isn’t claiming anything. |

It has been widely discussed on these forums and if you just go and look at the stock intake system you can find the bottlenecks. If you follow it all the way to the turbo inlet it is even worse. Add other mods on top of a stock air box and it would just exacerbate the issue as you try to pull more air for more boost etc. So gains on this mod alone are negligible on a 100% stock set up, but would become more noticeable the more you add on. Wouldn't surprise me if they manufacturer didn't give numbers since there are so many factors at play when you move beyond 'just' an intake.

I along with many here are already at FBO or above status. If there's a gain to be had there we'd see more of it than someone with stock/ stage1 mod levels. This intake would eliminate a good 5-6ft (est) of intake piping just to the turbo inlet pipe. As much as I love that idea, I don't love it $440 worth . At that price I'd want that, AND the proof that it would make ME more more power (not to mention, I'd want to see that it can maintain a proper idle with the relocated MAF sensor that it seems to need). The extending wires part doesn't scare me at all; but again, I'd want to see if it can hold a smooth idle. I'm really excited by this product and can't wait to see these questions addressed! It's certainly creating a lot of buzz!

I’ve read BMW doubles’ thread about his custom intake but I haven’t seen the stock intake, other than the turbo inlet, discussed much. Edit: I did see the thread about the K&N panel filter making as much power as the afe intake. That’s what I’m getting at. |

This product definitely needs more than butt dyno results to justify its price tag. From a flow stand point, this looks less efficient than the stock airbox. It's now pulling from the air inside it's self made "box" instead of having air forced into the airbox via plumbing, lowering intake air velocity. Maybe it won't make a difference and the shortened run makes up for it, but it's hard to say.

I would love to buy just that 90 degree elbow and turn it to run the intake out the front behind the grill. Like BMWdoubles did.
Can I buy just the elbow!?! |
