My question... can you set it to one or another display types, without it being related to the modes? I wouldn't want to see it change each time I go from mode to mode.

I love the clarity of the full black panel display, I'd have to try MFID to be convinced it was better.

You can keep the display in the standard mode (all the time); regardless of the actual mode (ECO PRO, Comfort, Sport) the car is being driven in.

A 2000 year S1 which I've had for 11 years now.

I use it pretty much 40/40 for commuting (my Wife tends to use the Bee Emm).

It was the "basic" model, but as time goes on and things break they get replaced by upgrades. as ironically the basic kit is more difficult to get...

So it's now running S2 111R Springs and Dampers (which killed a bit of float when going over crests), upgraded discs, braided hoses, a S2 Wiper amoungst others.

It's good to have a totally analogue experience in the modern world: no airbags; ABS; tracton control; central locking, electic windows. I have upgraded the stereo to one that plays USB sticks and has bluetooth, it does make phone calls a bit "tigger happy TV" - "HELLO I'M IN THE CAR, THAT'S WHY I'M SHOUTING OVER LOUD BRUMMING NOISES!" though...

Makes for a good benchmark for "normal" car handling.

Luckily with the HUD you don't have to use it that much!
I've also noticed that as I have HUD I don't get any value from the screen real estate between the speedometer and Rev counter. If I didn't have HUD this space would be used for navigation pictograms and media etc.... Agree the way to go is standard dials + HUD. My previous 5 was this format and I preferred it

If you switch the HUD off, you'll get the pictograms which were on the HUD to appear in the gap between the speedo and rev counter on the multifunctional display.

There is a setting in iDrive. Can't remember where it is and my car is not with me at the moment.
I think it is in Settings, Instrument Cluster Display...
