New to BMW and looking at 2013 F10. I'm steering away from 550i now.
Hi all
I'm new to BMW and was interested in a few different 2013 5-series models. Originally I was set in trying to get a 550i since I have come from many many years in the V8 world (Corvettes, Camaros, and Mustangs). I've owned a 1000 HP Corvette and 950 HP Camaro. Way too fun but I'm so over those days haha. However as age creeps up, I find myself leaning more towards luxury and/or comfort. Although it's beautiful music, my ears can't handle my old setup of a 408 iron block to long tube headers, no cats and dumped (haha)...yet the V8 kid in me still loves the power. However the more I started researched and reading, I'm honestly scared to get a 550i due to the myriad of N63 issues I've been reading about. There is a 2013 550i for sale for $12k. The used dealer sells a lot of BMW's (among other brands) said his mechanics and local shops took a look and the engine appears to be in great condition (so he says). The carfax shows that the car has been services every 5-6 months from previous owners. But I could not see anything about the CCP. The problem I think is that it has 107k on it. Any thoughts? Should I stay clear? Also I've been looking into a few 535i (2013 models). Most were around the $12k with anywhere from 95 to 150k miles. What are your thoughts on high mileage? Is it too much of a risk (regardless of model)? The 150k mile vehicle was all highway as they commuted roughly 100 miles a day for work. This car would be a DD for me. I drive about 50 miles a day on weekdays. Any thoughts for this BMW newbie would be greatly appreciated. |

IMHO how fast and far can you run from this? I had my heart set on a 550 until I read about all the problems. I bought the 535i and couldn't be happier. Enough (as if there is such a thing ) power for me and it hasn't let me down at all. |

I would stay away from the V8 for the reasons you mentioned.
535i with M sport is the sweet spot IMO. Still some power, and can wind it out a bit. Plus the classic BMW I6. Stay away from the 4 too wimpy. Maybe consider a 335i? You get decent power and can get into a lower mileage car.? Make sure to get a PPI. These cars can get $$$ to repair. Parts and repairs are still at the level of a $70k car.

Love my 535i and ready to hit 100k! I've been racing since the 90's and like you, I like the power but my age is getting up there and now I want luxury, performance and looks! the 535i has plenty of power and with today's tunes you can bump that power quiet a bit to satisfy those speed needs you may crave for here and there
