I have been driving my 535i and before that an E39 530 through many winters and agree with a lot of the posts here - go with narrower tread and smaller diameter wheels. It's a much more confidence inspiring setup.
Solid advice, and the one I always followed on all my vehicles, except F10.

It just happened that winter package was identical in size as my summer setup. To be honest I wasn't sure how I felt about it, as "going smaller" is conventional wisdom and good logic - but, I was not lacking grip or getting stuck with 245/18/45 on F10.

Less surface to slide on and more sidewall is better in the winter, with some performance penalty to pay of course - for those who care about that during winter months.
