Post Retrofitting 4 Zone Climate Control on My 2016 BMW 550i xdrive

Hey guys, is there anyway to install a rear 4 zone climate control on the F10 sedan? These pictures are from a 2011 F10 550.

My 2016 car is fully loaded, 97k msrp minus night vision/rear entertainment package and has the rear heated seats but doesn't have the screen or knobs to control temperature

Yes there is...I did it....

It is not simple.

There two or so posts that describe partial installation with partial 4-zone, but none completed it, other than me, that actually achieved 100% 4-zone.

Things that need installed for ISTA+ error free installation:

1. 4-zone flap distribution assembly (located behind the dashboard)
2. 4-zone front left, center and right vents (they have controls built into them)
3. Add wiring left, center and right vents
4. Add wiring center vent to front control panel (blue connector)
5. Add wiring from front control panel to rear control panel
6. Add wiring from rear control panel to light module (front left drivers area)
7. Add wiring from rear control panel to LIN bus
8. Add wiring from rear fuse panel in trunk to rear control panel
9. Add wiring from rear fuse panel to left floor heater/temp sensor
10. Add wiring from rear fuse panel to right floor heater/temp sensor
11. Add wiring from rear fuse panel to center console fan
12. If you change out center console for B-pillar vents, then new center console
13. B-pillar right trim with vent
14. B-pillar left trim with vent
15. B-pillar to center console tubes, left and right
16. 4-zone rear carpet, or remove foam to sit over item 13 above
17. Left floor heater, temp sensor, flap assembly
18. Right floor heater, temp sensor, flap assembly
19. 4-zone rear vent assembly on center console
20. Add '4NB' FO Code via E-Sys

The dashboard removal wasn't that bad, and the distribution box needs to be changed out to really be true 4-zone, which has additional flaps required to adjust air flow to the rear cabin via the floor, and center console. Once the distribution box is installed, the other items really just get "replaced" as you put the car back together.

I bought a complete interior car harness from a VIN that had the option 4-zone option, rear heated seats, and other desired options. Then I pulled the wires and connectors required, installed those along the path of my original harness, and programmed the car.

Kid loves the ability to run the A/C full blast, and heated seats simultaneously.

This upgrades using eBay parts was under $1500, half of which was the harness. I would not use new BMW parts for this upgrade...

So 4-zone was NOT an option for the '14 535...but now I have this option.

Cheers

Wow, seems like it is a LOT of work and expensive. Do you think its worth it?

Also do you have the part numbers?

- 51437325367 4-zone B-pillar duct (qty 2)
- 51437325342 4-zone B-pillar duct bracket (qty 2)
- 51477343070 4-zone floor carpet, rear, black (qty 1)
- 61319290751 4-zone rear controller w/ seat heating, w/o ceramic knobs (qty 1)
- 51169206729 4-zone center console, storage compartment (qty 1)
- 51169288913 4-zone center console w/ rear b-pillar vent holes (qty 1)

1. You will need to use 8 of your own actuators, need a total of 13, but this is cheaper to buy if you buy separately, but it's less than $200 from eBay for the 1st 4 part numbers, bought as a complete assembly and included the correct wiring harness (above list does not include distribution box harness)

2. The last item, center console, can be modified by cutting out the plug plate, so you don't need to buy, but I purchased the center motor, center tray, rear vent, rear controller, and center console as a complete unit. You'll need to reuse your trim and arm rest from your vehicle

3. The list of items does not include the odd parts, like 10mm plastic trim nuts, tray inside center console, extra screws, and/or any plastic trim parts you break when doing this mod

4. If you get all the hardware installed, it won't work until you VO code for 4-zone '4NB'

Your biggest issue will be the wiring....w/o it being pre-fabricated (pulled from an OEM harness), then you'll need to be able to read 'newTIS.info' really well, and be able to crimp wires and assemble your own connectors.

Never took my whole interior out before, so the three full Saturday's required to pull everything out, was 2/3's learning...did it twice to troubleshoot codes, and it took only 4 hours to pull everything out except carpet (front seats, rear seats, center console, complete dashboard)

Good luck.

Are you sure rear climate control was not an option in 2014? I have it in my 2011, along with HUD, LDW and active blind spot warning.

4-zone was an option in 2014, just not for the 535...so 550, yes and ///M5, yes.

There are posts that support that the Active Hybrid 5 and ///M5 were the only F10's in 2013 that you could get 4-zone climate...standard in AH5 and option for ///M5. I don't know this for a fact.

For a fact, 4-zone wasn't on the option list in 2014 for the F10 535 sedan....and this didn't sit well with many owners, including me.

This was a well-worth-it modification. it's that big of a deal. If I had time, I'd make and sell the harness, it's actually not that complicated, and I'd route it from the trunk through the center of the rear seat, through the center console, instead of down the right side of the car, around the front passenger, and up through the center console. Splicing into the LIN bus wires does not need to be at the factory location up by the driver's firewall...the LIN bus wires run around the vehicle interior, so right rear door would work.

The harness would only need to be 1/2 of the factory length....but the F10 is getting to an age where very few care...I've got 32,000 miles and plan to keep it for another 6 years or more (will only have 64,000 by that time)...so mod's to my F10 still have a high ROI.

4-Zone was definitely *not* an option in the USA 2015 F10 550i - I know this because we had to special order it and get BMW regional approval (which I'm thankful we did, 4-Zone is so worth it)!

Good luck to you OP!

Damn I have all the packages in my 2016 except m-sport, entertainment, and cold weather. Surprised that my car doesn't have rear climate controls

Nice work, that's a big lift to add some comfort for your little ones, good job!

My F10 did come with 4 zone climate, but the vents are broken. Which of these part numbers is the upper vent assembly?

Probably #19 in the list in the post above yours.

Or you can simply go to the part database and pull up the diagram...which will be #4 in the diagram and part nbr index that would be below the diagram:

Good luck.
Where are you located?
I am on the east coast and I was wondering if you coud help me with this retrofit

I'm on the West Coast....and you are literally the 3rd person from the East Coast that has asked me for help on this Mod. This would be hard to "help" even if both of us were local.

I did help someone with this mod "from afar" across town...and the person ended up doing 2 F10's.

Once you do it once, it's easy - really, but still labor intensive.

Happy to help "from-afar" if you end up pulling the trigger.

Also, is it possible to do this retrofit with working B pillars without changing out the entire center console? I have a bmw individual interior with silk grey merino leather and its impossible to find a match center console side trims. I also have ambient lights installed. Please see attached

What would the solution be?

Removal and isntallation of parts, is pretty easy....so the hardest is doing the wiring, which I've not heard of a dealership doing anything other that the "whole" wiring harness replacement (never an upgrade)...under warranty.

But if you can get the dealership to run wires or install a complete "upgraded" harness, please post.

Your individual center console can be reused. The only modification required on the center console would be to cut-out the lower duct, on the rear bottom portion of the cent console, which is the souce of air to the B-pillar vents. You can also, opt to not install the B-pillar vents....and then you can use your center console as-is with no modifications required.

Im struggling to find the wiring harnesses online for this retrofit. Any advice or part numbers?
