New '15 f10 535 xdrive, noticed inaccurate and wandering steering at speeds above 60mph. I constantly have to make small adjustments to keep the car straight. if I hit a bump at this speed the steering wheel almost wants to turn on its own, so unlike previous f30s I have to hold the steering very tight. It doesn't matter if I'm in sport or normal mode.
Am I expecting too much from this car or this is normal ? Please share how you f10 steering feels. |

Although the steering is lighter than on previous BMW's that I've owned mine is fine in terms of tracking straight at speed. have you checked if your tyre pressures are ok and not over inflated? You could always try running them at a slightly lower pressure...

I've had this issue since new. It wanders all over the place, especially in comfort mode and you have to make an annoying amount of tiny corrections all the time.
F10's steering, even in the supposedly better LCI 2014+ versions, is still very soft and light. If you are coming from even an F30, it's going to be noticeable. If you are coming from an E90/E46 it's going to be horrifying at first to get used to. If you are coming from an MBZ or Lexus - HEY IT'S PERFECT! Different tires help a little bit but not much.

As for F10 being inaccurate or wandering, that shouldn't be the case. Assuming no issues with tire pressure and alignment, and road being perfectly flat, it should track straight, I know mine does. They do however tend to be sensitive to even minimal slope on the road (which isn't always obvious to the driver). They will gently want to follow the slope, and I was told - no first hand experience, this is more obvious wider the tires are (X5 was used as an example). |

Like Keyser Soze, I find my f10 needs far more small corrections than I would expect. On roads with lots of bends / curves the steering is fine, the car goes exactly where it is pointed and handles remarkably well for such a big car, although I find the steering far too light even in sport mode. Put the car on a motorway however & drive dead straight (or straightish), that is when the small corrections have to be made, it feels a little like your driving on a windy day!

Yeah and note I had my old E46 and E90 alongside the F10 - so I was driving them different days of the week and the steering input was completely noticeable in the F10.
It's not a lot or like a 1968 Impala - but it is about 2 cm's of constant correction where with the other two they would steer themselves. Ditching the runflats to Michelin PSS's didn't help either. Other than that I think it handles great as well for such a big girl.

My 2012 535i steering improved significantly on the highway when I changed to newer tires. The original tires were wearing on the edges and I think the wear affected it tracking right on the road.
I bought the car at 20k miles and had the alignment done plus added newer tires. That helped my steering quite a bit and may help yours.

There is a program called the "program for steer ahead" See this post with a scanned work order from BMW of Monrovia. It may help. http://f10.5post.com/forums/showpost...7&postcount=20 |
